ASIRT is investigating police actions after an incident that resulted in the death of a woman.–HANDOUT PHOTObwagner@medicinehatnews.com<\/a>\nAlberta\u2019s police watchdog says a Calgary officer fired a rifle at a woman who got out of her vehicle with a knife during a confrontation on Deerfoot Trail on June 21. The woman later died in hospital.<\/p>\n
The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team, known as ASIRT, is now investigating. The agency looks into cases where police actions in Alberta lead to serious injury or death.<\/p>\n
ASIRT released its first account of the incident on Friday. Calgary police were called after reports of an erratic driver near the Deerfoot Meadows shopping centre. Officers found the vehicle, a compact SUV, on the northbound side of Deerfoot Trail between Memorial Drive E and 16th Avenue NE.<\/p>\n
Police used their vehicles to stop the SUV in the far left lane at about 5:30 p.m. Officers then blocked northbound traffic. Within minutes they also stopped southbound traffic at 16th Avenue NE.<\/p>\n
The driver stayed inside the SUV. ASIRT said early information from officers at the scene was that she had a knife. Officers tried to speak with her, but she would not get out.<\/p>\n
About 20 minutes after police first stopped the SUV, officers approached the passenger side. They broke the front passenger-side window and used pepper spray.<\/p>\n
The woman then got out and moved toward officers. ASIRT said officers used a projectile launcher and a taser. One officer also fired a police rifle. ASIRT said \u201cthe specific sequence of events remains under investigation.\u201d<\/p>\n
Officers moved toward the woman and recovered a knife. Police and tactical medical staff gave emergency care before paramedics took her to hospital in life threatening condition. She later died. No officers or other members of the public were hurt.<\/p>\n
Doug King, a professor of justice studies at Mount Royal University told Global News that investigators will need to decide whether the force used was justified. \u201cWhat we saw in the video is there were several different modes of use of force,\u201d King said. He noted ASIRT will also be able to review video from the officers body worn cameras.<\/p>\n
The Police Review Commission directed ASIRT to investigate the case as a Level 1 matter. Under the Police Act, Level 1 matters generally cover incidents involving serious injury or death, or serious allegations about an officers actions. ASIRT is part of Police Review Commission, an independent civilian-led agency.
