{"id":76491,"date":"2025-08-17T14:05:06","date_gmt":"2025-08-17T14:05:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/76491\/"},"modified":"2025-08-17T14:05:06","modified_gmt":"2025-08-17T14:05:06","slug":"skatepark-receives-funding-for-mental-health-programming","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/76491\/","title":{"rendered":"Skatepark receives funding for mental health programming"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Suicide awareness, self-regulation techniques, peer mentorship, gang intervention and mental health workshops will be implemented into  existing community programs at the skatepark.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom:11px\">THUNDER BAY \u2014 A provincial grant is enhancing mental health programming to create a safe space for the local skateboard community.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Female Boarder Collective and Cinema 5 Skatepark received a nearly $100,000 grant last month from the Ontario Trillium Foundation to enhance mental health programs, staff training and inclusive initiatives that support suicide prevention and well-being for youth.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa Bowles, executive director of the Female Boarder Collective, said Thunder Bay&#8217;s suicide rate is extremely high.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLast year I had a friend, her son committed suicide and there have been so many in our community, not just in our skateboard community but in our community, and one is just too many,&#8221; she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>So far, the boarder collective and Cinema 5 Skatepark have used the Ontario Trillium Foundation grant to employ 10 staff members with Indigenous Cultural Competencies and Trauma Inform Training and SafeTALK and Mental Health First Aid Training.<\/p>\n<p>The funded education ensures that employees can recognize and respond to a mental health crisis accurately.<\/p>\n<p>Youth, who are a part from the Female Boarder Collective and Cinema 5 Skatepark, will additionally receive first-aid training, empowering youth to support their peers in time of crisis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe just want to support and help as many people as we can and if it impacts one person&#8217;s life, (then) we have been successful with this,\u201d Bowles said.<\/p>\n<p>The Female Boarder Collective\u00a0will also implement suicide awareness, self-regulation techniques, peer mentorship, gang intervention and mental health workshops into\u00a0existing community programs.<\/p>\n<p>Bowles said the skatepark was founded in 2022 with three main priorities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur first priority was our 2SLGBTQIA+ and female programs,\u201d Bowles said. \u201cOur second priority was accessibility, so that&#8217;s our autism club and accessible skateboard programs, and then our third priority is our mental health programs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have been able to accomplish that within the two-and-a-half\u00a0years that we&#8217;ve been open, so we are really excited about this funding,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>To continue being a driving community force, federal funding for programs like this is needed more than ever, said Thunder Bay-Superior North MPP Lise Vaugeois.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnfortunately, one of the things I&#8217;ve learned as an MPP is that the suicide rate amongst young people is actually very, very high, disturbingly high, in a way that it&#8217;s hard for me to imagine actually,\u201d said Vaugeois.<\/p>\n<p>For more information on the Female Boarder Collective, upcoming events and available programs visit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cinema5skatepark.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">the Cinema 5 website<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Suicide awareness, self-regulation techniques, peer mentorship, gang intervention and mental health workshops will be implemented into existing community&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":76492,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[35],"tags":[49,48,84,393,394],"class_list":{"0":"post-76491","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-mental-health","8":"tag-ca","9":"tag-canada","10":"tag-health","11":"tag-mental-health","12":"tag-mentalhealth"},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/76491","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=76491"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/76491\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/76492"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=76491"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=76491"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=76491"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
