Many cyclists utilize them in some capacity, either as a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bicycling.com\/bikes-gear\/a41447729\/e-bike-commuting-guide\/\" target=\"_self\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.bicycling.com\/bikes-gear\/a41447729\/e-bike-commuting-guide\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"transportation\" data-node-id=\"0.5\" class=\"body-link css-hwwm8d emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">transportation<\/a>, exercise, or both, yet some of us still don\u2019t quite understand how riding an electric-powered bike can offer health benefits similar to a conventional bike.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"1\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">The beauty of e-bikes: You still gain many of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bicycling.com\/training\/a20029633\/8-ways-cycling-will-make-you-healthier\/\" target=\"_self\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.bicycling.com\/training\/a20029633\/8-ways-cycling-will-make-you-healthier\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"health benefits\" data-node-id=\"1.1\" class=\"body-link css-hwwm8d emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">health benefits<\/a> you get from conventional cycling, just with a little boost. A <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosone\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pone.0211779\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosone\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pone.0211779\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"study\" data-node-id=\"5.3\" class=\"body-link css-hwwm8d emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">study<\/a> published in PLOS One found that after eight weeks of riding three times a week for 30 minutes each ride, e-bike riders improved their reaction times, executive function (which involves the ability to plan, focus, and juggle multiple projects), and self-reported <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bicycling.com\/culture\/a37669486\/pro-riders-share-their-mental-health-journeys\/\" target=\"_self\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.bicycling.com\/culture\/a37669486\/pro-riders-share-their-mental-health-journeys\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"mental health\" data-node-id=\"5.7\" class=\"body-link css-hwwm8d emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">mental health<\/a>. Researchers found these benefits for both regular cyclists and e-bike riders, but said that e-bikers may experience even greater benefits.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"7\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">\u201cWe have found that people just enjoy [e-bikes]. They say they are fun, and that can have positive effects on your overall well being,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pdx.edu\/profile\/jennifer-dill\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.pdx.edu\/profile\/jennifer-dill\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Jennifer Dill\" data-node-id=\"7.1\" class=\"body-link css-hwwm8d emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Jennifer Dill<\/a>, Ph.D., a professor of urban studies and planning and director of the Transportation Research and Education Center at Portland State University.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"8\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">Other research confirms riding e-bikes can be mentally beneficial for older adults who are adjusting to the aging process or those who have neurological issues, she adds.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"9\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">In one small <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/32945706\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/32945706\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"study\" data-node-id=\"9.1\" class=\"body-link css-hwwm8d emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">study<\/a> published in Disability and Rehabilitation, stroke survivors mentioned e-bikes helped them increase physical activity levels despite having some level of physical impairment (like having to ride with one hand), because the pedal assistance improved their confidence to cycle for longer and farther. Though researchers noted larger scale studies are needed to recommend e-bikes as a form of rehabilitation for stroke survivors, these observations prove e-bikes can help bridge the gap to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bicycling.com\/health-nutrition\/a43679407\/physical-activity-high-blood-pressure-study\/\" target=\"_self\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.bicycling.com\/health-nutrition\/a43679407\/physical-activity-high-blood-pressure-study\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"physical activity\" data-node-id=\"9.5\" class=\"body-link css-hwwm8d emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">physical activity<\/a> for some patients.<\/p>\n<p>2. Improves Joint Health<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"12\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">Many people fall in love with cycling because it\u2019s a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bicycling.com\/training\/a43275865\/low-impact-cardio-workout-no-equipment\/\" target=\"_self\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.bicycling.com\/training\/a43275865\/low-impact-cardio-workout-no-equipment\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"low-impact\" data-node-id=\"12.1\" class=\"body-link css-hwwm8d emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">low-impact<\/a> sport, which means you\u2019ll feel less pressure on your joints (hips, knees, and ankles), then you would if doing a high-impact activity, like running or jumping.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"13\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">When running, your body can experience a force anywhere between three to five times your bodyweight upon landing, says <a href=\"https:\/\/wexnermedical.osu.edu\/sports-medicine\/team\/physical-therapists\/melissa-gallatin\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/wexnermedical.osu.edu\/sports-medicine\/team\/physical-therapists\/melissa-gallatin\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Melissa Gallatin\" data-node-id=\"13.1\" class=\"body-link css-hwwm8d emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Melissa Gallatin<\/a>, P.T., physical therapist and medical endurance team lead at The Ohio State University. \u201cIf you have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bicycling.com\/health-nutrition\/a38106476\/knock-out-knee-pain-for-good\/\" target=\"_self\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.bicycling.com\/health-nutrition\/a38106476\/knock-out-knee-pain-for-good\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"knee\" data-node-id=\"13.3\" class=\"body-link css-hwwm8d emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">knee<\/a> osteoarthritis, that places more pressure on the joint, versus just pedaling, which there\u2019s not so much of that impact,\u201d she says. \u201cIt can build the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bicycling.com\/training\/a43554055\/what-muscles-does-a-bicycle-work\/\" target=\"_self\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.bicycling.com\/training\/a43554055\/what-muscles-does-a-bicycle-work\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"muscles\" data-node-id=\"13.5\" class=\"body-link css-hwwm8d emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">muscles<\/a> around the joint without having the trauma of the impact.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>3. Aids Recovery<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"16\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">Riding an e-bike is a great way to modify and monitor your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bicycling.com\/training\/a37761751\/cycling-recovery-guide\/\" target=\"_self\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.bicycling.com\/training\/a37761751\/cycling-recovery-guide\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"recovery\" data-node-id=\"16.1\" class=\"body-link css-hwwm8d emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">recovery<\/a> as you return to cycling post-injury, Gallatin says. \u201cIf you\u2019re recovering from an injury, for example, patellofemoral pain, you\u2019re supposed to avoid a lot of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bicycling.com\/training\/a64826998\/cycling-uphill-climbing-tips\/\" target=\"_self\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.bicycling.com\/training\/a64826998\/cycling-uphill-climbing-tips\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"uphill climbs\" data-node-id=\"16.3\" class=\"body-link css-hwwm8d emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">uphill climbs<\/a>. So if you\u2019re out on your bike, if you run into an uphill climb, you can kick the e-bike in and take the stress off that quad, so that it\u2019s not overworking and allow it to recover,\u201d she explains.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"17\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">Also, going for an easy ride on an e-bike can aid your recovery after an intense workout. \u201cIt\u2019ll take some of the stress off, so that you\u2019re not overworking the muscles, but you\u2019re getting joint movement, and circulation to help with any type of lactic acid buildup,\u201d Gallatin says. <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/20544484\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/20544484\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Research\" data-node-id=\"17.1\" class=\"body-link css-hwwm8d emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Research<\/a> confirms the benefits of light physical activity to help your muscles recover.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"18\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">A ride on an e-bike might also help you stick to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bicycling.com\/training\/a44275938\/zone-2-training\/\" target=\"_self\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.bicycling.com\/training\/a44275938\/zone-2-training\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"lower-intensity training zone\" data-node-id=\"18.1\" class=\"body-link css-hwwm8d emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">lower-intensity training zone<\/a> you want to maintain for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bicycling.com\/training\/a20021266\/7-ways-to-nail-your-recovery-rides\/\" target=\"_self\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.bicycling.com\/training\/a20021266\/7-ways-to-nail-your-recovery-rides\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"recovery rides\" data-node-id=\"18.3\" class=\"body-link css-hwwm8d emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">recovery rides<\/a> between hard workout days.<\/p>\n<p>4. The CDC recommends 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity (plus, two days of strength training).<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"22\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">\u201cWe know that when you\u2019re riding an e-bike, it is lower intensity when you\u2019re using that electric assist. But the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5406898\/#CR19\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5406898\/#CR19\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"research\" data-node-id=\"22.1\" class=\"body-link css-hwwm8d emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">research<\/a> has found that people still are in that range of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity, which is what the health recommendations are for adults,\u201d says Dill.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"23\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">Also, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bicycling.com\/news\/a28819663\/e-bike-fitness-levels-study\/\" target=\"_self\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.bicycling.com\/news\/a28819663\/e-bike-fitness-levels-study\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"e-bike\" data-node-id=\"23.1\" class=\"body-link css-hwwm8d emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">e-bike<\/a> riders tend to ride for longer and maintain activity levels comparable to conventional cyclists, Dill says. In fact, one <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S259019821930017X\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S259019821930017X\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"study\" data-node-id=\"23.3\" class=\"body-link css-hwwm8d emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">study<\/a>, published in 2022 in Transportation Research in Interdisciplinary Perspectives, surveyed more than 10,000 e-bike and conventional riders to find e-bike cyclists averaged more miles per trip, 5.8 miles, compared to conventional cyclists, who averaged 2.9 miles.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"24\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">What\u2019s more: The study found that many riders aren\u2019t trading in their conventional bikes for e-bikes, but instead, they are utilizing both. So if you have an e-bike, or are looking to invest in one, this just means you\u2019ll likely increase your activity levels even more. Plus, you can still get your heart rate up and get in a great <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bicycling.com\/training\/a40754418\/e-bike-workout\/\" target=\"_self\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.bicycling.com\/training\/a40754418\/e-bike-workout\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"workout when you ride an e-bike\" data-node-id=\"24.1\" class=\"body-link css-hwwm8d emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">workout when you ride an e-bike<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>5. Boost Overall Health<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"27\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">In addition to getting you to move more and clock more miles, e-bikes also improve your overall well-being. According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/articles\/10.3389\/fspor.2022.1031004\/full\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/articles\/10.3389\/fspor.2022.1031004\/full\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"systematic review and meta-analysis\" data-node-id=\"27.1\" class=\"body-link css-hwwm8d emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">systematic review and meta-analysis<\/a>, published in 2022 in Frontiers in Sports and Active Living, researchers found that e-bike riding can boost your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bicycling.com\/training\/a40117642\/what-is-vo2-max\/\" target=\"_self\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.bicycling.com\/training\/a40117642\/what-is-vo2-max\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"VO2 max\" data-node-id=\"27.5\" class=\"body-link css-hwwm8d emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">VO2 max<\/a>, a marker of your aerobic fitness level.
