This week in Africa, the Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo reached two major milestones: the first confirmed case diagnosed outside Africa and a sharp upward revision of the funding required for the response, even though the outbreak has not yet reached its peak.<\/p>\n
At the same time, a study published in The Lancet Infectious Diseases modeled the risk of the virus spreading to South Sudan. Elsewhere, Burkina Faso inaugurated four new hemodialysis centers as part of its drive toward greater health sovereignty.<\/p>\n
Response Cost Nearly Triples as Africa CDC Seeks\u00a0$1.4\u00a0Billion<\/p>\n
During a June 25 press briefing, Africa CDC Director General Jean Kaseya said the total cost of responding to the Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda had been revised to\u00a0$1.4\u00a0billion, nearly three times the\u00a0$518\u00a0million estimated at the beginning of June.<\/p>\n
The revised estimate now includes humanitarian needs that were not fully accounted for in the initial projection. Sixty-nine camps in Ituri and North Kivu are home to 1.15\u00a0million displaced people, while another one\u00a0million people live in returnee communities without adequate support.<\/p>\n
As of June 25,\u00a0$910\u00a0million had been pledged during a high-level African Union meeting, but only 13% of that amount had actually been disbursed.<\/p>\n
\u201cWithout this\u00a0$1.4\u00a0billion and without resolving the humanitarian crisis, we will not stop this epidemic,\u201d Jean Kaseya said.<\/p>\n
High Probability of Spread to South Sudan Within 12 Weeks<\/p>\n
A modeling study published in The Lancet Infectious Diseases by teams that included World Health Organization researchers estimates a 69.3% probability that the Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak will spread to South Sudan within the next 12 weeks.<\/p>\n
Under the central scenario, the models project between 870 and 990 cases by the end of June. In a sustained transmission scenario, cases could reach 8,210 by September, while the worst-case scenario projects more than 66,000 cases.<\/p>\n
South Sudan, whose health system remains particularly fragile, faces a high risk of importation through mining corridors and cross-border population movements. The projections are probabilistic warnings rather than certain forecasts, but they reinforce the urgency of providing immediate health support to neighboring countries that have so far remained unaffected.<\/p>\n
Humanitarian Doctor Returning From DRC Tests Positive in France<\/p>\n
On June 24, France confirmed its first Ebola case. The patient is a humanitarian doctor working with the medical NGO ALIMA who had returned from a mission in Ituri, Democratic Republic of Congo. He was asymptomatic during his flight from Kinshasa but developed mild symptoms after arriving in France and was hospitalized in stable condition.<\/p>\n
Five passengers who traveled with him were identified as contacts and placed in isolation for 21 days. According to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), the risk of transmission to the general public remains very low.<\/p>\n
Africa CDC said the doctor had complied with all travel requirements before departing the Democratic Republic of Congo and said the health surveillance measures \u201cworked as intended.\u201d<\/p>\n
African Union Calls for Regional Solidarity<\/p>\n
As the Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak continues to worsen, the African Union has formally called on its member states to strengthen regional solidarity and coordination. The AU stressed the need to keep humanitarian corridors open to allow response supplies and medical teams to reach conflict-affected areas, where insecurity is directly hampering outbreak control efforts.<\/p>\n
With only a small share of pledged funding having been disbursed, the call for regional solidarity has taken on greater urgency. Clinical trials of experimental treatments for the Bundibugyo strain are expected to begin in the coming days, according to Africa CDC.<\/p>\n
Gold Mines, Displacement Camps and M23 Complicate the Response<\/p>\n
In an analysis published on June 23, the Africa Center for Strategic Studies, an academic institution within the U.S. Department of Defense, identified several structural factors that make this the most difficult Ebola outbreak to contain in recent history. The outbreak\u2019s epicenter in Ituri includes major gold deposits, where thousands of artisanal miners work in overcrowded conditions without access to adequate sanitation.<\/p>\n
In Mongbwalu, the province\u2019s main mining town, authorities estimate that more than 80 people died from Ebola before the outbreak was officially detected. Confirmed cases have also been reported in an area of South Kivu currently controlled by the M23 armed group, directly limiting humanitarian access.<\/p>\n
In displacement camps in Bunia, at least 30 deaths with symptoms consistent with Ebola have been recorded in a single camp housing 15,000 people. In response, Congolese Health Minister Dr. Samuel Roger Kamba Mulamba announced on June 21 a pilot program providing free treatment for all illnesses in Ituri to improve early detection and encourage patients to seek care without fear of treatment costs.<\/p>\n
Burkina Faso Opens Four New Hemodialysis Centers, Cuts Treatment Costs by 80%<\/p>\n
In the Sahel, Burkina Faso has expanded its hemodialysis capacity. Prime Minister Rimtalba Jean Emmanuel Ou\u00e9draogo inaugurated four new centers in Banfora, Dori, D\u00e9dougou and Fada N\u2019Gourma on June 20.<\/p>\n
The four centers were built at a cost of more than 1.2\u00a0billion CFA francs and will provide about 45,000 additional dialysis sessions each year, increasing the country\u2019s annual capacity to more than 200,000 sessions.<\/p>\n
Burkina Faso now has 12 hemodialysis centers, compared with five before the MPSR2 came to power. Alongside the new facilities, the government eliminated the 500,000 CFA franc deposit previously required from patients with end-stage kidney disease and reduced the cost of a dialysis session from 15,000 CFA francs to 2,500 CFA francs, an 80% reduction.<\/p>\n
Six additional centers are planned in other cities under the RELANCE Plan, along with two mega-centers in the Kadiogo and Guiriko regions. According to the government, these projects are part of the National Health Development Strategy (SNDS) 2026-2030, which has a budget of 3.9436\u00a0trillion CFA francs.<\/p>\n
WHO Urges Faster Progress on Nutrition in Africa<\/p>\n
The World Health Organization\u2019s office in the Republic of Congo has warned that Africa continues to lag behind on nutrition and called for urgent action across the region.<\/p>\n
Thirty percent of African children under the age of five still suffer from stunting, well above the global average of 22%. Across the continent, the nutrition targets set for 2025 have not been achieved. No African country is on track to meet the target for reducing anemia among women of reproductive age.<\/p>\n
Chronic malnutrition leaves populations more vulnerable to health crises, as demonstrated by the ongoing Ebola outbreak in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, where more than half of children under five in Ituri province already suffer from chronic malnutrition. The WHO identified the integration of nutrition services into primary healthcare, stronger food legislation and fiscal measures targeting unhealthy foods as priority actions.<\/p>\n
Senegal Reports First Chikungunya Cases of the Year Across Six Regions<\/p>\n
In Senegal, chikungunya has been detected in six regions. The Ministry of Health reported the country\u2019s first six confirmed chikungunya cases of 2026 during the week ending June 13. The cases were recorded in six different regions, with no apparent geographic clustering. No deaths have been reported.<\/p>\n
Chikungunya is a viral disease transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes, the same vectors that spread dengue and Zika. It causes acute fever accompanied by often debilitating joint pain. There is no specific treatment, and care remains focused on relieving symptoms.<\/p>\n
Senegal experiences cyclical chikungunya outbreaks, particularly in the eastern regions where the virus is endemic. The early detection of these cases at the start of the rainy season provides an important early warning for public health surveillance, especially as rainfall conditions favorable to mosquito breeding are expected to intensify across the Sahel in the coming weeks.<\/p>\n
