<\/p>\nThe Bear premiered a new season in late June every year for five consecutive years. That kind of consistency is rare from Emmy-winning streaming\/cable shows (The Bear is produced by FX for Hulu; this season is also airing on FX for the first time), and it will be something we miss about The Bear, which is once again at the top of our list of the best shows to watch on Hulu now that its final season is out. Other shows on the list include\u00a0Not Suitable for Work, a new workplace comedy from creator Mindy Kaling; \u00a0The Testaments, a YA-ish spinoff of\u00a0The Handmaid’s Tale; and many other current broadcast and cable shows, Hulu originals, and classics.\u00a0 <\/p>\n
There’s a method to our madness when it comes to our picks for this list. Our selections are focused on new releases, original shows from Hulu and FX, and critical hits you can’t stream anywhere else, as well as a handful of underrated favorites you might not find on other lists. Ayo Edebiri and Jeremy Allen White, The Bear<\/p>\n

The Bear\u00a0is a dramedy (emphasis on the “dram”) following the dysfunctional family \u2014 blood and otherwise \u2014 that works at a Chicago restaurant. Carmen Berzatto (Jeremy Allen White<\/a>), a very serious chef, takes over his brother Mikey’s (Jon Bernthal<\/a>) greasy, flailing sandwich shop after Mikey’s suicide. Over the course of the series, along with his sous chef Syd (Ayo Edebiri<\/a>) and his front of house manager Richie (Ebon Moss-Bachrach<\/a>), he turns the place into a high-level fine dining establishment, but at great psychological and emotional cost. By the end \u2014 all five seasons are currently streaming \u2014 he has to decide whether or not it’s worth all the pain and trauma to be the best, and whether he wants to keep transferring the pain and trauma of his family onto his work instead of dealing with it. Like I said, heavy on the dram! It was an Emmy-dominating sensation in its first two seasons, lost its way for a bit, and finished pretty strong, staying true to its own highly stylized, montage-and-music-loving identity the whole time. -Liam Mathews [Trailer<\/a>]\u00a0<\/p>\n Ella Hunt and Will Angus, Not Suitable for Work<\/p>\n Disney\/Cara Howe<\/p>\n There’s always room in the market for a “young friends in New York City” sitcom, and this one comes from creator Mindy Kaling<\/a> (her frequent collaborator Charlie Grandy<\/a> is the showrunner), who knows a thing or two about sitcoms. Ella Hunt<\/a> leads the ensemble as AJ Pascarelli, a first year analyst at an investment bank. Her neighbors across the hall include a guy who ghosted her in college and doesn’t remember her and a fellow analyst who has a crush on her. Insecure’s Jay Ellis<\/a> plays her boss. It would like to be Gen Z’s\u00a0Friends,\u00a0but we’ll see. -Liam Mathews[Trailer<\/a>]<\/p>\n Saagar Shaikh and Asif Ali, Deli Boys<\/p>\n Disney\/Elizabeth Sisson<\/p>\n Brothers Mir and Raj couldn’t be more different. Mir is bent on being the successor of his father’s Philadelphia-based convenience store business, while Raj couldn’t give a damn. But when their father dies in an accident and the dark reality of how he amassed his wealth is unearthed (hint: It’s not through delis), Mir and Raj must throw any existing plans out the window. Bold and irreverent,\u00a0Deli Boys\u00a0follows the two brothers as they take up a life of crime. The cast features\u00a0Asif Ali<\/a>\u00a0as Mir,\u00a0Saagar Shaikh<\/a>\u00a0as Raj,\u00a0Iqbal Theba<\/a>\u00a0as their father, and\u00a0Poorna Jagannathan<\/a>\u00a0as their father’s right-hand woman, Lucky.\u00a0-Kat Moon\u00a0[Trailer<\/a>]<\/p>\n Aidan Turner, Rivals<\/p>\n Robert Viglasky\/Disney<\/p>\n This dramedy series sounds like it could be dry \u2014 it’s set at an independent television network that’s trying to compete with the BBC in the mid-1980s \u2014 but it’s actually anything but, filled with romance and intrigue and punchy dark comedy. David Tennant<\/a> and Alex Hassell<\/a> star as the titular rivals, a nouveau riche founder of the network and a hereditary nobleman Tory MP, respectively, with Aidan Turner <\/a>in a scene-stealing role as a hotheaded Irish newsreader. It’s based on the Rutshire Chronicles series of novels by Jilly Cooper which are popular in the UK, and won the International Emmy Award for Drama Series in 2025. -Liam Mathews [Trailer<\/a>]<\/p>\n Sir Ben Kingsley and Yahya Adbul-Mateen II,\u00a0Wonder Man<\/p>\n Suzanne Tenner\/Marvel<\/p>\n This Marvel series is genuinely different from every other Marvel show. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II<\/a> stars as Simon Williams, a struggling actor auditioning for the lead role in a remake of the in-universe movie Wonder Man. The thing is, Simon actually really does have superpowers, which means he’s legally forbidden from being an actor, so he has to keep his powers secret \u2014 which is hard, because when he gets angry, he can’t control them. Ben Kingsley<\/a> co-stars as Trevor Slattery, a daffy actor who previously appeared as a villain in Iron Man 3, and is now one-half of an unlikely buddy comedy duo. It’s the MCU’s first shiowbiz satire, which is something we didn’t know we wanted but actually works well.\u00a0-Liam Mathews [Review<\/a> |\u00a0Trailer<\/a>]<\/p>\n Chase Infiniti and Lucy Halliday,\u00a0The Testaments<\/p>\n Disney\/Russ Martin<\/p>\n This follow-up series to The Handmaid’s Tale is based on a novel of the same name by Margaret Atwood and follows Agnes (Chase Infiniti<\/a>) and Daisy (Lucy Halliday<\/a>), students at Aunt Lydia’s (Ann Dowd<\/a>) elite prep school for future wives of high-ranking men in Gilead, the dystopian future America where women are oppressed by the violent fundamentalist religious order that rules the nation. As the young women come to terms with what the future holds for them, they start to rebel. -Liam Mathews [Review<\/a> |\u00a0Trailer<\/a>]<\/p>\n Kaitlin Olson, High Potential<\/p>\n Disney\/Jessica Perez<\/p>\n The great Kaitlin Olson<\/a> (her other show, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,\u00a0is also on this list) stars in this ABC procedural as Morgan Gillory, a single mother with an IQ of 160. She works as a cleaning lady at the police station, and when she makes a Good Will Hunting-style change to an evidence board that cracks a murder case, one thing leads to another and she becomes a consultant, using her powers of observation and deduction to help Det. Adam Karadec (Daniel Sunjata<\/a>) solve crimes. It’s a great addition to the “unlikely police consultants” subgenre that also includes Castle and Lucifer. -Liam Mathews [Trailer<\/a>]<\/p>\n Sarah Pidgeon and Paul Anthony Kelly,\u00a0Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette<\/p>\n FX<\/p>\n America’s tragic prince and princess get their own version of The Crown in this anthology series from creator Connor Hines and executive producer Ryan Murphy<\/a>. JFK Jr. is embodied by Paul Anthony Kelly<\/a> in his first acting role (he really looks a lot like him), and Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy is played by Tony nominee Sarah Pidgeon<\/a>. They were one of the most stylish, iconic, and obsessed over couples of the 1990s, but they died in a private plane crash in 1999. Love Story dramatizes their life in highly dramatic, controversial fashion; actress Daryl Hannah<\/a>, Kennedy Jr.’s ex, strongly objected to her negative portrayal in the series via an op-ed in theNew York Times<\/a>. It wouldn’t be a Ryan Murphy show without something in extremely poor taste! -Liam Mathews [Trailer<\/a>]<\/p>\n Sterling K. Brown, Paradise<\/p>\n Disney\/Brian Roedel<\/p>\n This Is Us<\/a> creator Dan Fogelman<\/a> and star Sterling K. Brown<\/a> reunite for this twisty thriller that’s what you get when you combine the emotional drama of This Is Us with the puzzle box sci-fi mystery of Lost<\/a>. Brown stars as Xavier Collins, a Secret Service agent investigating the murder of the President (James Marsden<\/a>) inside of a post-apocalyptic bunker where the 10,000 people who are what remains of America live. There are a lot of variations on “What happened?” that need to be answered, and Fogelman and Brown are capable hands guiding you through them. It’s an entertaining show that expertly walks the fine line between serious and silly. -Liam Mathews [Trailer<\/a>]<\/p>\n Zach Braff and Donald Faison, Scrubs<\/p>\n Disney\/Jeff Weddell<\/p>\n The beloved 2000s comedy (that wasn’t afraid to be sad) is back. The revival season is airing on ABC now and brings back J.D. (Zach Braff<\/a>), Turk (Donald Faison<\/a>), Elliot (Sarah Chalke<\/a>) and most of the rest of the gang for more laughter and more tears. J.D. returns to Sacred Heart Hospital and finds that while many things have changed, the job has not. It’s the same classic Scrubs, a little older, but no less goofy. The first nine seasons are also available to stream on Hulu. -Liam Mathews [Trailer<\/a> | Review<\/a>]<\/p>\n Ashton Kutcher, The Beauty<\/p>\n FX<\/p>\n Ryan Murphy<\/a> is back on his freaky Nip\/Tuck sh– with this timely and gruesome horror series. Evan Peters<\/a> and Rebecca Hall<\/a> play FBI agents investigating a string of shocking deaths of fashion models related to a viral (in both senses of the word) drug treatment called “the Beauty,” which is itself connected to a billionaire tech entrepreneur known as the Corportation (Ashton Kutcher<\/a>). Their investigation takes them into a sordid underworld where people are willing to do anything to be beautiful. Anthony Ramos<\/a> and Jeremy Pope<\/a> round out the main cast, while the stunty supporting cast includes Ben Platt<\/a>, Megan Trainor<\/a>, Bella Hadid<\/a>, Lux Pascal<\/a>, Nicola Peltz Beckham<\/a>, and Isabella Rossellini<\/a>. Episodes range in length from 24 to 51 minutes. -Liam Mathews [Trailer<\/a>]\u00a0<\/p>\n Nathan Fillion and Jenna Dewan, The Rookie<\/p>\n Disney\/Mike Taing<\/p>\n The Rookie\u00a0has long outlived its title. This very solid procedural has been chugging along for eight seasons and counting. Nathan Fillion<\/a> plays John Nolan, who joins the LAPD at age 40. He’s almost 50 now! And with well over 100 episodes, you can get heavy into a binge if you’ve never watched (or are ready to watch again). It’s consistently one of the most popular shows on Hulu. -Liam Mathews [Trailer<\/a>]<\/p>\n Erin Doherty, A Thousand Blows<\/p>\n Hulu<\/p>\n Steven Knight<\/a>, the creator of\u00a0Peaky Blinders, isn’t a stranger to staging big fights in old-timey England in his shows. But his new series,\u00a0A Thousand Blows, is almost exclusively about fisticuffs, as Knight explores the world of underground bare-knuckle boxing in 1880s London. The series follows a pair of Jamaican immigrants (Malachi Kirby<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Francis Lovehall<\/a>) who get sucked into unsanctioned scrappin’ by the leader of the Forty Elephants (Erin Doherty<\/a>) and go up against a veteran boxer (Stephen Graham<\/a>) who isn’t keen on giving up his crown. -Tim Surette\u00a0[Trailer<\/a>]\u00a0 <\/p>\n Jason Clarke and Patricia Arquette, Murdaugh: Death in the Family<\/p>\n Disney\/Daniel Delgado Jr.<\/p>\n Academy Award winner Patricia Arquette<\/a> and the ubiquitous Jason Clarke<\/a> star in this dramatization of the Murdaugh murders, a sensational crime in South Carolina that captured the nation’s attention earlier this decade. Clarke plays Alex Murdaugh, who \u2014 spoiler alert \u2014 was convicted of murdering his wife Maggie (Arquette) and son Paul (Johnny Berchtold<\/a>). The limited series got mixed reviews overall, but Clarke and Arquette’s performances were praised. -Liam Mathews[Trailer<\/a>]<\/p>\n Glen Powell, Chad Powers<\/p>\n Disney\/Daniel Delgado Jr.<\/p>\n Hulu watched Apple make a\u00a0sports comedy based on a made-up character<\/a>\u00a0and turn it into more than 60 Emmy nominations and 13 wins, and figured, “We can do that.”\u00a0Chad Powers<\/a>\u00a0is based on a prank sketch comedy character created by two-time Super Bowl winner Eli Manning, who donned prosthetics to change his appearance and tried out for Penn State as a walk-on for Manning’s web series\u00a0Eli’s Places. In Hulu’s take, Hollywood It Guy\u00a0Glen Powell<\/a>\u00a0plays Chad, a disgraced college football quarterback who takes a second chance at stardom by adopting a new persona and appearance to try to make a Southern football team.\u00a0Steve Zahn<\/a>\u00a0co-stars as the team’s coach. -Tim Surette\u00a0[Trailer<\/a>]\u00a0<\/p>\n Ethan Hawke, The Lowdown<\/p>\n Shane Brown\/FX<\/p>\n The great Ethan Hawke<\/a> stars in this noir homage from Reservation Dogs<\/a> creator Sterlin Harjo<\/a>, who’s also great. Hawke plays Lee Raybon, a “truthstorian,” rare book dealer, and freelance journalist with a knack for finding the exact stories the powers that be in his hometown of Tulsa don’t want exposed \u2014 which, as you can see in the photo above, gets him in big trouble with people who are not afraid to give him the beatdown. As he follows the money, he finds out that this story goes everywhere. “At its heart,\u00a0The Lowdown\u00a0is a story that wants the viewer to care about the truth as much as its main character does,” Allison Picurro writes in her 9.5\/10 review for TV Guide<\/a>. “It’s fearless and gonzo, easily one of the best new shows of the year.” -Liam Mathews [Trailer<\/a>]\u00a0<\/p>\n Selena Gomez, Martin Short, and Steve Martin, Only Murders in the Building<\/p>\n Disney\/Patrick Harbron<\/p>\n Only Murders in the Building\u00a0is at the center of an unlikely but wonderful Venn Diagram. It’s got sleuthing,\u00a0Steve Martin<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Martin Short<\/a>,\u00a0Selena Gomez<\/a>, jokes about podcasts, fake Broadway musical flops, and\u00a0Sting<\/a>. The comedy-crime-farce hybrid follows a trio of neighbors \u2014 an actor with one long-ago TV hit (Martin), a washed-up Broadway director (Short), and an enigmatic artist (Gomez) \u2014 who come together to investigate murders in their building. It’s an old-school mystery about three lonely people with secrets that gets both deeper and sillier as it goes. And cast list keeps ballooning with big names \u2014 the new season features Academy Award winners Christoph Waltz and Ren\u00e9e Zellweger \u2014 as new seasons premiere every late summer\/early fall like clockwork. -Kelly Connolly [Trailer<\/a>]<\/p>\n Sydney Chandler, Alien: Earth<\/p>\n FX<\/p>\n Xenomorphs have been running around drooling on people for more than 45 years, but never like this. Fargo’s Noah Hawley<\/a> reimagines Alien<\/a>for TV with this smart and surprising franchise expansion. Sydney Chandler<\/a> stars as Wendy, the first human-synthetic hybrid, a girl whose consciousness was uploaded to a powerful humanoid robot body. As she comes to terms with what she is, she has to decide how human she wants to be. Meanwhile, the aliens \u2014 Xenomorphs and Facehuggers, of course, but also a squid-like eyeball monster that takes over its host’s body and brain in gross, terrifying fashion \u2014 have crash-landed on Earth, and the Prodigy corporation can only contain them for so long. It’s a large-scale, ambitious show with timely themes of AI questions and corporations (and individuals) with too much power. -Liam Mathews [Trailer<\/a>]<\/p>\n King of the Hill<\/p>\n Hulu<\/p>\n Mike Judge<\/a> and Greg Daniels<\/a>‘ cult favorite Texas-set animated sitcom is back for a new season, 15 years after the last one. Bobby Hill (Pamela Adlon<\/a>) is grown up now, and his father Hank (Judge) and his mother Peggy (Kathy Najimy<\/a>) are older, but it’s still the same satirical but warm-hearted slice of American life. The world has gotten stranger, and Hank is increasingly befuddled by it, but he loves his family, even if that boy still ain’t right. -Liam Mathews [Trailer<\/a>]<\/p>\n Rob Mac, Charlie Day, and Glenn Howerton, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia<\/p>\n Patrick McElhenney\/FX<\/p>\n It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia is the highest form of escapist humor on TV, like if the average person’s id was in control of a long-running cable comedy. Following the daily lives of a morally bankrupt, self-absorbed, clinically insane, often irredeemable foursome who own and operate a bar in Philadelphia, Sunny is the kind of series that delights in refusing to let its characters grow as people. As a unit, the gang has only succeeded in becoming more narcissistic and clueless to the world around them as the seasons have stretched on. They continue to behave terribly and never learn from their mistakes\u2026 but in a really funny way, thanks to the beauty of the 30-minute sitcom format, which allows the show to blow itself up every week and reset the clock in the next episode. -Allison Picurro\u00a0[Trailer<\/a>]<\/p>\n Anthony Edwards,\u00a0ER<\/p>\n Getty Images<\/p>\n If you fell into The Pitt<\/a> and are craving more high-intensity medical procedural action, you’re in luck, because there are over 300 episodes of ER for you to watch next. The Pitt’s Noah Wyle<\/a> started his career on ER, which premiered in 1994 and ran until 2009, and The Pitt actually was originally conceived of as an ER revival before it evolved into its current form. ER is the ultimate show about emergency room doctors saving lives while having trouble managing their own, and over the course of its run, its cast included George Clooney<\/a>, Julianna Margulies<\/a>, Anthony Edwards<\/a>, Eriq La Salle<\/a>, and many others. It’s the best in its class. -Liam Mathews [Trailer<\/a>]<\/p>\n Elisabeth Moss,\u00a0The Handmaid’s Tale<\/p>\n Sophie Giraud, Hulu<\/p>\n Who needs escapism when you can have the least escapist show on TV?\u00a0The Handmaid’s Tale\u00a0has developed a reputation for being a huge downer as real life has inched closer to life in Gilead, the totalitarian theocracy the series imagines as the future of America. But the refusal to offer easy relief can be cathartic in its own way, and The Handmaid’s Tale’s one-step-forward, two-steps-back revolution makes every rare moment of real progress hit harder. Over the span of the series, June (Elisabeth Moss<\/a>) has gone from trying to survive in Gilead to fanning the flames of rebellion \u2014 and potentially getting a little too caught up in her quest for revenge. The complete series is streaming now. -Kelly Connolly\u00a0[Trailer<\/a>]<\/p>\n Michelle Williams and Jenny Slate, Dying for Sex<\/p>\n Sarah Shatz\/FX<\/p>\n Michelle Williams<\/a> doesn’t do a lot of comedy, but when she does, you know it’s gonna be sad. Funny, but also sad. She stars in this based-on-a-true-story limited series dramedy as a woman who, when diagnosed with terminal cancer, leaves her husband to explore sexual possibilities she never got to experience. Helping her along the way is her best friend, played by Jenny Slate<\/a> in the best role of her career so far.\u00a0-Liam Mathews\u00a0[Trailer<\/a>]<\/p>\n Lola Petticrew, Say Nothing<\/p>\n Rob Youngson\/FX<\/p>\n A thoughtful dramatic adaptation of Patrick Radden Keefe’s acclaimed nonfiction book of the same name, Say Nothing tells the story of a group of Northern Irish IRA fighters over the course of decades, as they change from young radicals who will do anything for their cause into weary middle-aged people wondering if any of the violence was worth it. The subject matter is heavy, but the show never feels like homework, thanks to its cast of compelling characters (led by fiery Lola Petticrew<\/a> as the complex IRA figure Dolours Price) and the empathy and humanity it grants every one of them. -Liam Mathews [Trailer<\/a>\u00a0|\u00a0Review<\/a>]<\/p>\n Futurama<\/p>\n Hulu<\/p>\n Futurama is getting a bit long in the tooth these days after numerous cancellations and revivals since it original premiered back in 1999, but this animated sci-fi sitcom will always hold a warm place in our hearts for the way the adventures of Fry, Leelah, Bender, and their pals introduced so many heady and interesting science-fiction concepts in such an accessible and fun way \u2014 Rick and Morty, for one, would not exist if Futurama hadn’t paved the way more than a decade earlier. -Phil Owen [Trailer<\/a>]<\/p>\n Terry Ryan, Jared Keeso, Andrew Antsanen, and Jonathan Diaby, Shoresy<\/p>\n Hulu<\/p>\n Shoresy creator, star, and bona fide TV genius\u00a0Jared Keeso<\/a>\u00a0took the formula he crafted that made Letterkenny<\/a> so popular and applied it to a serialized comedy about a bunch of hockey doofuses in northern Canada that shows the true love of sport and team camaraderie better than any sports comedy before it (looking right through you, Ted Lasso). There aren’t many shows that can start with gags about taking a crap in a lake (an “aquadump,” in the show’s parlance) and then leave you bawling as an epic season on the rink comes to a close. All of\u00a0Shoresy’s juvenile humor wouldn’t mean much without what truly scores for\u00a0Shoresy: the unfettered appreciation of emotion, whether it be the anticipation of the drop of the puck, the adrenaline of an on-ice brawl, or the swell of a town rallying around a squad of toothless goons. -Tim Surette [Trailer<\/a>]<\/p>\n Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney,\u00a0Welcome to Wrexham<\/p>\n Patrick McElhenney\/FX<\/p>\n If\u00a0Ryan Reynolds<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Rob Mac<\/a>\u00a0were both real-life Ted Lassos, but they were the owners instead of the coach \u2014 so basically, if they were both Rebecca Welton \u2014 the documentary about them would be\u00a0Welcome to Wrexham. This FX docuseries follows Reynolds and Mac’s purchase of a struggling Welsh football club, Wrexham A.F.C., in 2020, and their thus-far-successful attempts to turn its fortunes around while learning the ropes. -Kelly Connolly\u00a0[Trailer<\/a>]<\/p>\n Hiroyuki Sanada, Shogun<\/p>\n Katie Yu\/FX<\/p>\n The novel Sh\u014dgun, by James Clavell, is a classic for a reason, and FX’s big-budget adaptation of this story of violent political intrigue in feudal Japan \u2014 led by the always-excellent Hiroyuki Sanada as Lord Yoshii Toranaga \u2014 has both the support from the bosses and the vision from co-creators Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks to deliver a series that’s more than worthy of the name. While FX has never quite had the clout or prestige of HBO \u2014 though we all know its shows are on par \u2014\u00a0Sh\u014dgun\u00a0is just the latest great FX series to demonstrate that you can get pay cable quality from a basic cable network. -Phil Owen [Trailer<\/a>]<\/p>\n Sofia Oxenham and M\u00e1ir\u00e9ad Tyers,\u00a0Extraordinary<\/p>\n Natalie Seery\/Hulu<\/p>\n Somehow among the glut of superhero shows, Emma Moran has created a comedy about people with superpowers with a unique twist: In a world where everyone gets suped up on their 18th birthday, 25-year-old Jen (M\u00e1ir\u00e9ad Tyers<\/a>) still has yet to discover her superpower, leaving her feeling left out and cranky. But with the help of her friend Carrie (Sofia Oxenham<\/a>), who can channel the dead, and a cat named Jizzlord, she navigates the professional and romantic life of a powerless Gen Z-er.\u00a0Extraordinary\u00a0is the fresh, funny face of a generation that can’t be bothered, and Tyers and Oxenham are absolutely delightful. -Tim Surette\u00a0[Trailer<\/a>]<\/p>\n Jared Kesso, K. Trevor Wilson, Nathan Dales;\u00a0Letterkenny<\/p>\n Amanda Matlovich\/Hulu<\/p>\n Canada is well known for its feel-good comedies like Schitt’s Creek<\/a> and Kim’s Convenience<\/a>, in which characters grow and learn lessons about life through their experiences with each other. Letterkenny is not that. We’ve all relied on commiseration with competent coworkers to help us endure bad bosses like Ava Coleman, the preening and vindictive principal hilariously played by\u00a0Janelle James<\/a>. In 2022, we called Abbott Elementary\u00a0the\u00a0best show on TV for a reason<\/a>, and now we even have some well-deserved Emmy wins to back us up.\u00a0-Liam Mathews\u00a0[Trailer<\/a>]\u00a0<\/p>\n Donald Glover, Atlanta<\/p>\n Guy D’Alema\/FX<\/p>\n Donald Glover<\/a>‘s genre-defying, TV form-redefining comedy series is one of the most artistically daring shows in TV history. It will be a long time before we ever see anything like this provocative, idiosyncratic, and unpredictable FX show ever again. It made stars out of\u00a0Brian Tyree Henry<\/a>), Darius (LaKeith Stanfield<\/a>), and Van (Zazie Beetz<\/a>) and turned Glover from a likable sitcom actor into an artist. The one-sentence description is that it’s about an underachieving young man working as the manager for his cousin, an ascendant rapper, but that’s inadequate to capture the whole range of what Atlanta’s about. It’s really about the surreal experience of being a Black person in a world that’s very weird about Black people. -Liam Mathews\u00a0[Trailer<\/a>]\u00a0<\/p>\n Matthew Rhys and Keri Russell, The Americans<\/p>\n Jeffrey Neira\/FX<\/p>\n One of the best TV shows of the last decade, The Americans stars\u00a0Matthew Rhys<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Keri Russell<\/a>\u00a0as Soviet spies living undercover as Americans in Virginia in the 1980s during the height of the Cold War, while raising their none-the-wiser children as regular Americans and befriending the FBI agent (Noah Emmerich<\/a>) who lives next door. It only won four Emmys during its six-season run, but it should have won about 20 more. It’s near-perfect television, with\u00a0one of the best series finales of all time<\/a>. -Tim Surette\u00a0[Trailer<\/a>]\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/p>\n Billy Porter, Pose<\/p>\n FX<\/p>\n How wrong we were to believe we’d seen a full, three-dimensional representation of the LGBTQ community on TV before Pose<\/a>arrived in 2018. The FX series, set decades ago in the New York City ballroom community, has served to show us how much we don’t know and haven’t seen. In this heartwarming and often hilarious drama, the trans women who started the ballroom scene \u2014 the scene that’s made Black\/Latinx gay lingo like “slay,” “read,” and “spill the tea” mainstream \u2014 get their due, making them the subject of the story instead of the afterthoughts. Through characters Blanca (Mj Rodriguez<\/a>), Elektra (Dominique Jackson<\/a>), Angel (Indya Moore<\/a>), and Pray Tell (Billy Porter<\/a>), we befriend queer people of color who’ve banded together for survival, for love, and the pursuit of happiness. It’s radical for humanizing trans people and portraying their unique experiences with compassion, but it shouldn’t be: It’s fundamentally an engrossing, uplifting show stuffed with drama and heart. Consider it essential viewing. \u2013Malcolm Venable [Trailer<\/a>]<\/p>\n Pamela Adlon and Olivia Edward,\u00a0Better Things<\/p>\n Suzanne Tenner\/FX<\/p>\n For five seasons,\u00a0Pamela Adlon<\/a>‘s bittersweet comedy was the most human show on TV by a mile. It’s all because\u00a0Better Things, following the daily life of Sam Fox (Adlon), a single mother of three and a working actor, found the joy in celebrating the mundanity of existence. From its lovingly shot cooking scenes to the casual way it examines the daily sacrifices parents make for their kids, this is a show about the little moments that make us who we are and make life worth living. -Allison Picurro [Trailer<\/a>]<\/p>\n Aisling Bea,\u00a0This Way Up<\/p>\n Hulu<\/p>\n In a perfect world, someday we’ll talk about This Way Up with as much reverence as we talk about Fleabag<\/a>. Created by and starring Aisling Bea<\/a>, the dark comedy begins in the aftermath of a depressive episode; when we meet \u00c1ine (Bea) at the beginning of Season 1, she’s recently out of rehab for “a teeny little nervous breakdown.” The comedy and the tragedy of the show comes out of \u00c1ine’s interactions with the people in her life \u2014 the ways she tries to keep the depths of her suffering from her protective older sister, Shona (Sharon Horgan<\/a>); her fledgling, potentially romantic connection with Richard (Tobias Menzies<\/a>); and her tragic friendship with Tom (Ricky Grover<\/a>). It’s a snapshot of a life in the process of being rebuilt, of what it’s like to not simply ignore but actually live with mental illness. It’s messy and chaotic and hilarious in all the best ways. You will also absolutely walk away with “Zombie” by the Cranberries stuck in your head, and that’s part of the charm. -Allison Picurro [Trailer<\/a>]<\/p>\n Bob’s Burgers<\/p>\n Fox<\/p>\n Bob’s Burgers\u00a0is one of the best family comedies, not to mention one of the best comedies about working-class characters, on TV right now. The Fox sitcom follows the Belcher family, whose burger restaurant is an all-hands-on-deck job that even the kids get roped into. The show is straightforward about their constant financial stress, which leads to some of the family’s best hijinks but also highlights how hard they work to care for each other. Parents Bob (H. Jon Benjamin<\/a>) and Linda (John Roberts<\/a>) have an enviably healthy marriage, and each Belcher kid is encouraged to be as delightfully weird as they want. Bob’s also serves up some of the best puns in the game. -Kelly Connolly [Trailer<\/a>]<\/p>\n Nick Offerman and Sonoya Mizuno,\u00a0Devs<\/p>\n Raymond Liu\/FX<\/p>\n After movies like Ex Machina and Annihilation, Alex Garland is proving to be one of sci-fi’s most exciting creators, and his TV debut features all his trademarks. Devs is packed with philosophy and intellectual discussions<\/a> about existence, technology’s place in society’s advancement, and the dire consequences of tinkering with fate, almost to the point that it’s too cerebral. But take it slow and you’ll find a beautifully filmed single-season series that has big points to make about the dangerous precipice advanced computing has us inching toward. -Tim Surette\u00a0[Trailer<\/a>]<\/p>\n Eric Andre, The Eric Andre Show<\/p>\n Adult Swim<\/p>\n It’s hard to describe The Eric Andre Show in a way that makes any kind of sense. Presented in the style of low-budget public access TV, it could technically be called a talk show. It’s hosted by noted purveyor of chaos\u00a0Eric Andre<\/a>, who plays a hyper-fictionalized version of himself, and he’s joined by his detached co-host\/straight man, Hannibal Burress<\/a>. Every episode begins with Andre violently destroying his set, and his eventual monologue usually spirals into a series of dark musings dragged out from the depths of his mind. He invites celebrities, who are sometimes real and sometimes intentionally bad impersonators, into the mess. The guests typically come in blissfully unaware of what is about to happen to them, which is clear from their often shocked, furious, and terrified faces. Andre’s host spares no one and never acknowledges that anything is out of the ordinary, even as things get progressively more bizarre, like the time live rats were released on Stacey Dash’s feet<\/a>. This show is definitely not for everyone, but I can guarantee is that it’s not like anything else you’ll ever watch. -Allison Picurro\u00a0[Trailer<\/a>]<\/p>\n Jon Hamm, Fargo<\/p>\n Michelle Faye\/FX<\/p>\n Noah Hawley’s comical crime anthology series based on the vibes of the Coen Brothers is set in and around the titular Midwestern city across various decades, multiple crime families, and multitudes of bad luck. But what’s always consistent \u2014 besides the accent and the incredible character names \u2014 is the quality of the casts, which have included Jean Smart<\/a>, Ewan McGregor<\/a>, Billy Bob Thornton<\/a>, Chris Rock<\/a>, Martin Freeman<\/a>, Juno Temple<\/a>, Jon Hamm<\/a>, and many more. Seasons 1 and 2 are the show at its best \u2014 violent, hilarious, and thematically off-the-wall \u2014 and Season 5 is a return to form. -Tim Surette\u00a0[Trailer<\/a>]<\/p>\n Timothy Olyphant, Justified<\/p>\n FX<\/p>\n One of Elmore Leonard’s literary characters became television legend with FX’s Justified, arguably the best adaptation of Leonard’s work on any screen. U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens, brought sexily to life by the sexy Timothy Olyphant<\/a>, watches over the backwoods of Harlan County in Kentucky, cutting down fugitives with firepower and insults, both of which bad guys never recover from. It has the best dialogue of any TV show ever (my opinion), with poetic prose Leonard himself would chuckle at, and a rotating cast of criminals with more personality than most shows’ main characters. Also, Walton Goggins<\/a>! As an added bonus, Olyphant kindly dusted off his big ol’ hat for the limited series spin-off\u00a0City Primeval, which finds Raylan facing off with a violent criminal called the Oklahoma Wildman (Boyd Holbrook<\/a>) in Detroit. Most comebacks don’t work out well, but this one was very welcome. -Tim Surette and Allison Picurro\u00a0[Justified Trailer<\/a>] [City Primeval Trailer<\/a>]<\/p>\n Nico Santos, Nichole Sakura, Ben Feldman, America Ferrera, Superstore<\/p>\n Greg Gayne\/NBC<\/p>\n For six seasons, Superstore was one of network TV’s hidden treasures, a sweet, clever comedy with a surprising rebellious streak. The show uses its setting in a Midwestern box store to dig into issues like unionizing, healthcare, and immigration that rarely get this kind of coverage on television, especially network sitcoms. These aren’t Very Special Episodes: They’re just facts of life for the show’s characters, so the topical storylines feel as natural as the jokes.
