July Social Security<\/a> checks are set to go out to recipients on a regular schedule next month, even with the Fourth of July holiday.<\/p>\n

The Social Security Administration<\/a>\u00a0pays its benefits on Wednesdays. The first wave of payments will be sent on the second Wednesday of the month, July 8, with subsequent payments going out on the third (July 15) and fourth (July 22) Wednesdays, according to the\u00a0SSA\u2019s calendar<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Beneficiaries who receive\u00a0Supplemental Security Income checks<\/a>\u00a0can expect their July 2026 checks on Wednesday, July 1.<\/p>\n

However, changes are coming<\/a> to the way the Social Security Administration issues payments. Those who get paper payments should know\u00a0the SSA plans to fully transition to electronic payments<\/a> by the end of the year.<\/p>\n

Recipients who use the Direct Express debit cards also have a change coming. The Treasury Department is\u00a0changing the bank that handles recipient debit cards<\/a>; Fifth Third Bank is replacing Comerica Bank as the financial agent for the Direct Express card program, the SSA said in a May 18 notice.<\/p>\n

In Vermont, more than 164,000 people<\/a> receive social security benefits, according to Congressional Statistics from December 2024. Nearly 71 million Americans<\/a> get Social Security, and 7.4 million get SSI, according to January 2026 numbers from the Social Security Administration.<\/p>\n

Here’s what to know about this year’s Social Security benefits.<\/p>\n

Social Security payment schedule for July 2026<\/p>\n

The Social Security Administration\u2019s yearly distribution schedule for\u00a02026<\/a>\u00a0is available online for recipients to use for budgeting purposes.<\/p>\n

Regular Social Security retirement benefits are slated to be distributed on the SSA’s usual schedule based on birth date:<\/p>\n

Wednesday, July 8:\u00a0Birth dates between the first and 10th of the month.<\/p>\n

Wednesday, July 15:\u00a0Birth dates between the 11th and 20th of the month.<\/p>\n

Wednesday, July 22:\u00a0Birth dates between the 21st and 31st of the month.<\/p>\n

Those who began getting benefits before May 1997 will be paid on Thursday, July 2.<\/p>\n

Recipients of\u00a0Supplemental Security Income checks\u00a0will be issued their July payments on Wednesday, July 1.<\/p>\n

The next time SSI checks will go out early will be on Friday, July 31, since Aug. 1 falls on a Saturday. After that, the schedule will remain normal until November, when the benefit will arrive on Oct. 30.<\/p>\n

What is SSI?<\/p>\n

Supplemental Security Income provides monthly benefits to those with limited income or resources who are 65 or older, blind, or have a qualifying disability. Children with a qualifying disability can also get SSI,\u00a0according to the SSA’s\u00a0website<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Adults who qualify for SSI generally do not have\u00a0monthly wages above $2,073<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Those eligible for SSI can begin the application process\u00a0online<\/a>, in person at your local\u00a0Social Security office<\/a> or by calling 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. local time during the work week.<\/p>\n

SSI payment schedule for 2026<\/p>\n

SSI checks will be sent out on the following dates in 2026,\u00a0according to the SSA calendar<\/a>:<\/p>\n

Wednesday, July 1, 2026: July 2026 payment<\/p>\n

Friday, July 31, 2026: August 2026 payment<\/p>\n

Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2026: September 2026 payment<\/p>\n

Thursday, Oct. 1, 2026: October 2026 payment<\/p>\n

Friday, Oct. 30, 2026: November 2026 payment<\/p>\n

Tuesday, Dec. 1, 2026: December 2026 payment<\/p>\n

What do I do if my scheduled payment date passes without payment?<\/p>\n

The Social Security Administration suggests that if you don\u2019t receive your payment on the expected date, allow three additional mailing days before contacting the agency. Most will arrive on time because 99% of beneficiaries are paid electronically.<\/p>\n

When can you start collecting Social Security?<\/p>\n

Everyone can start receiving reduced Social Security benefits as early as age 62. However, waiting until full retirement age results in a larger monthly payment.\u00a0That age has\u00a0gradually increased in recent years<\/a>, rising by two months for each successive birth year.<\/p>\n

For example<\/a>, if you were born in 1958, your full retirement age is 66 years and 8 months, while those born in 1959 reach it at 66 years and 10 months. For anyone born in 1960 or later, the full retirement age is 67.<\/p>\n
