{"id":766937,"date":"2026-06-28T14:55:22","date_gmt":"2026-06-28T14:55:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/766937\/"},"modified":"2026-06-28T14:55:22","modified_gmt":"2026-06-28T14:55:22","slug":"ae-for-life-threatening-cases-only-says-hospital","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/766937\/","title":{"rendered":"A&#038;E for life-threatening cases only, says hospital"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Hospitals in Surrey and Sussex say they are experiencing challenges due to the extreme temperatures.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">In Surrey, people have been told to only attend the emergency department at the East Surrey Hospital in Redhill for life-threatening illnesses or injuries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Surrey and Sussex NHS Healthcare Trust said the department was experiencing significant demand due to the extreme weather conditions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Meanwhile in Sussex, the University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust said some planned procedures have had to be postponed due to the heat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">With the hot weather expected to continue into the weekend the Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust &#8211; which covers sites including the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton, the Princess Royal in Haywards Heath, St Richard&#8217;s in Chichester and Worthing Hospital &#8211; is asking visitors to consider whether travelling to the hospital is essential.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The hospital said reducing footfall helped maintain a safe environment for patients, visitors and staff.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Earlier this week the hospital <a data-ylk=\"slk:declared a critical incident;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;link&quot;,&quot;yLinkElementType&quot;:&quot;article_link&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/ckg4j323eq9o?xtor=AL-72-%5Bpartner%5D-%5Byahoo.north.america%5D-%5Blink%5D-%5Bnews%5D-%5Bbizdev%5D-%5Bisapi%5D\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">declared a critical incident<\/a> due to high demand on its emergency care services, due to high temperatures which was subsequently stood down.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"An ambulance drives down the road outside the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"960\" height=\"540\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"rounded-lg\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/https:\/\/media.zenfs.com\/en\/bbc_us_articles_995\/69b9a65652b89f0a5f9917437bcf390c.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Some procedures have been postponed at the University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust [Reuters]<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">In a social media post the Sussex health trust said the high temperature was &#8220;affecting how specialist equipment operates&#8221;
