Under all the bluster of AI hype lies a real conundrum: companies are charging out-of-this-world prices<\/a> for a tool that still can\u2019t match the value<\/a> of a competent human. As AI companies and their financial backers continue to dump billions of dollars into AI development, the consequences of that basic contradiction are spilling out into offices and shops throughout the US. <\/p>\n The fintech firm Slash, for example, recently encouraged its employees to start using AI coding tools as much as possible, a phenomenon known as tokenmaxxing, with the ultimate goal of boosting productivity and lowering costs. Unfortunately, LLMs are too expensive \u2014 and not quite useful enough \u2014 to really make that a reality.<\/p>\n At Slash, one employee wasted an astonishing $80,000 in AI tokens to vibe code a lackluster video game called \u201cbrainrot shooter.\u201d As Business Insider describes it<\/a>, the first-person shooter is a barren experience where the player runs around shooting at enemies inspired by viral internet memes.<\/p>\n \u201cPls play it so we can write this off as a marketing expense,\u201d Slash wrote<\/a> on social media.<\/p>\n We encouraged the company last week to start vibe coding more but @nickbruhman<\/a> burned $80k in credits on the Slash card for a brainrot shooter<\/p>\n Pls play it so we can write this off as a marketing expense https:\/\/t.co\/mgHfidJ2R9<\/a><\/p>\n \u2014 Slash (@slashapp) June 23, 2026<\/a><\/p>\n Elsewhere, office workers who\u2019d been told to use AI as much as possible are incinerating incredible sums of cash on tasks that didn\u2019t need LLMs in the first place.<\/p>\n At consultant firm Accenture, for example, 404 Media reports<\/a> that non-tech workers are using corporate AI budgets to do things like convert PDF files into PowerPoint presentations.<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019re seeing from some of the data internally at least that it\u2019s actually not our engineers that are driving the token consumption,\u201d Accenture\u2019s head of AI strategy Justice Kwak said in an internal meeting, according to leaked audio files obtained by 404. \u201cIt\u2019s a lot of the non-engineers that are doing some of those behaviors.\u201d<\/p>\n It\u2019s a particularly ironic development, because workers are doing exactly what they were told \u2014 using the exciting new technology at all costs<\/a>, thereby exposing just how little they\u2019re getting in return.<\/p>\n For years, the titans of the tech industry have been subsidizing the mammoth costs of LLMs in a bid to spread their buzzy new tools to corporations far and wide. Once LLMs advance to a point where they can actually make companies money \u2014 a scenario which is becoming increasingly difficult to imagine<\/a> \u2014 the market will theoretically settle on a price that makes everybody happy.<\/p>\n Proponents of AI support this delayed approach. They point to examples like Uber, which operated at a loss for years in order to undercut the price of taxi cabs. Once Uber had destroyed the taxi industry, it could ratchet up prices as high as it wanted, and nobody could say no.<\/p>\n One key difference, as tech industry analyst Ed Zitron observed in an interview with Bloomberg<\/a>, is that Uber spent about $32 billion to eventually reach a market capitalization of $155 billion<\/a> today. That\u2019s a lot of money, to be sure. But Uber is playing in the Little Leagues compared to AI: as Zitron notes, that $32 billion is \u201cless than half of what Anthropic has raised in the last six months\u201d alone.<\/p>\n Now with AI companies forced to hike prices in order to keep up with exorbitant costs, the world\u2019s most expensive game of workplace malicious compliance might be coming to an end.<\/p>\n
