{"id":769466,"date":"2026-06-29T19:24:10","date_gmt":"2026-06-29T19:24:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/769466\/"},"modified":"2026-06-29T19:24:10","modified_gmt":"2026-06-29T19:24:10","slug":"winnipeg-city-council-approves-grant-program-to-renovate-vacant-derelict-properties","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/769466\/","title":{"rendered":"Winnipeg city council approves grant program to renovate vacant, derelict properties"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>New measures to persuade vacant building owners to rehabilitate their properties have been approved by Winnipeg\u2019s city council.<\/p>\n<p>Derelict and vacant homes have long been a problem in Winnipeg \u2013 from fires to other safety hazards.<\/p>\n<p>The city attempted to crack down by increasing fines and billing owners for firefighting costs.<\/p>\n<p>Now council has approved a different approach: a vacant building grant \u2013 with $3 million available to owners and developers \u2013 to help turn the boarded-up houses into occupied homes.<\/p>\n<p>Applicants are eligible for up to $35,000 per rehabilitated unit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVacant buildings continue to affect neighbourhoods across Winnipeg by creating safety concerns, increasing fire risk, and leaving potential homes and economic activity unrealized,\u201d said Coun. Vivian Santos, Chairperson of the standing policy committee on community services.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTogether, these new measures will help return more properties to use and build safer, stronger, and more vibrant communities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Applications open July 2.<\/p>\n<p>The City of Winnipeg is also introducing stricter penalties for vacant buildings that have been subject to inspections.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt a time when Winnipeg needs more housing, we want to remove barriers to redevelopment and ensure vacant properties don\u2019t sit idle for years,\u201d said Mayor Scott Gillingham. \u201cOur Vacancy to Vitality strategy is about taking action.
