The rapid expansion of AI is driving an unprecedented boom in data center construction, but severe weather and climate change are emerging as major threats to this growth.<\/p>\n
Record-breaking heatwaves, floods, strong winds and wildfires are placing increasing pressure on data centers, which already require significant cooling and electricity to operate efficiently.<\/p>\n
According to Zurich Insurance, severe weather has become the leading cause of losses in its U.S. data center builders\u2019 risk portfolio, accounting for nearly one-third of total losses.<\/p>\n
As new data centers move from traditional hubs to suburban and rural areas where land is cheaper, they face greater exposure to extreme weather events. A study by climate risk analytics firm First Street found that 79 percent of global data center capacity is exposed to climate-related hazards that can disrupt operations, increase downtime, and raise insurance and repair costs.<\/p>\n
Extreme heat creates a double challenge by increasing cooling requirements while simultaneously placing greater demand on power grids due to widespread air conditioning use. Cooling systems already consume around 40 percent of a data center\u2019s energy and higher temperatures further increase electricity demand. This can lead to grid failures and blackouts, as witnessed during heatwaves in parts of Europe.<\/p>\n
India is also witnessing rapid investment in AI and cloud infrastructure, making climate resilience an important concern.<\/p>\n
Driven by an aggressive push to attract investments, Andhra Pradesh has positioned Visakhapatnam as a major destination for data centers. Critics argue that in the race to bring in large projects, environmental concerns such as water consumption, energy demand, and climate resilience risk taking a back seat unless strict safeguards are enforced.<\/p>\n
However, the city is also exposed to cyclones, heavy rainfall, and rising temperatures linked to climate change. Large data centers require substantial amounts of electricity and water for cooling, which could put additional pressure on local resources during peak summer months.<\/p>\n
As more facilities are planned across India, it will be a doom for environmental sustainability.<\/p>\n
To address these challenges, technology companies are redesigning data centers with climate resilience in mind. Microsoft is improving site selection, monitoring systems, and infrastructure to withstand extreme weather.<\/p>\n
Nvidia has developed AI servers that operate at higher cooling temperatures, reducing energy consumption.<\/p>\n
Industry experts believe future facilities will increasingly incorporate climate-resilient designs, advanced cooling technologies, renewable energy, and water-efficient systems to ensure reliable operations despite worsening weather conditions while supporting the continued growth of the AI-driven digital economy.<\/p>\n
However, the world has survived without AI for centuries and can continue to thrive without it. The unchecked rush to promote AI is like setting off a slow-motion atomic bomb. It does not merely threaten jobs and livelihoods.<\/p>\n
