\u2060The Democratic Republic \u2060of the Congo (DRC) says confirmed \u200cEbola cases in the country have reached 1,307 and include \u2060377 deaths.<\/p>\n
In an update issued late on Monday, the country said the confirmed cases \u2060have been \u2060recorded \u2060in three provinces \u2013 Ituri, \u200cNorth Kivu and \u200cSouth \u200cKivu.<\/p>\n
The announcement comes as the AFP news agency reported that a case has been detected in a fourth province. A source at the DRC\u2019s National Institute of Biomedical Research (INRB) quoted by AFP said the viral haemorrhagic fever has spread to Haut-Uele, which borders South Sudan and the Central African Republic.<\/p>\n
The source said the case there was detected after an infected person travelled from Bunia, Ituri\u2019s capital, to Haut-Uele.<\/p>\n
That person has since died, another health source told AFP.<\/p>\n
Authorities are now trying to trace the chain of transmission and identify contacts.<\/p>\n
Its spread to Haut-Uele means the DRC\u2019s entire northeast, home to about 15 million people, is now affected.<\/p>\n
The conflict-hit province of Ituri is the epicentre of the country\u2019s latest Ebola outbreak, its 17th, which started in May.<\/p>\n
In many cases, the virus has spread at funerals, where the highly infectious bodies of Ebola victims are handled.<\/p>\n
For weeks, aid workers, facing mistrust among local communities, have struggled to plan safe burials in affected areas to prevent contact with the dead.<\/p>\n
In the DRC, funerals often last several days, during which family members and friends touch the body of the deceased.<\/p>\n
Reporting from a treatment centre in Rwampara in Ituri province, Al Jazeera\u2019s Catherine Wambua-Soi said health workers often lack sufficient equipment.<\/p>\n
\u201cThese centres have been attacked several times. Last month, tents here were set on fire by an angry mob. Some Congolese still distrust those trying to help,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey need more of everything: protective gear, medicines, rapid test kits \u2026 and body bags.\u201d<\/p>\n
On Saturday, the government issued a ban on public gatherings in four \u2060provinces, including the country\u2019s capital, Kinshasa, as it continues to battle the spread of the outbreak.<\/p>\n
