{"id":770863,"date":"2026-06-30T10:50:09","date_gmt":"2026-06-30T10:50:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/770863\/"},"modified":"2026-06-30T10:50:09","modified_gmt":"2026-06-30T10:50:09","slug":"before-the-bell-what-every-canadian-investor-needs-to-know-today-37","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/770863\/","title":{"rendered":"Before the Bell: What every Canadian investor needs to know today"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Before the Bell will pause tomorrow for the Canada Day holiday, and resume on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Equities<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Global markets were on the rise, headed for their best second-quarter performance in years on optimism about artificial intelligence and signs of easing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Wall Street futures were in positive territory after Dow hit a fresh record close yesterday. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">TSX futures followed sentiment higher.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\"> On Wall Street, markets are watching earnings from Nike Inc. and Constellation Brands Inc.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Some analysts are pinning their hopes on the coming earnings season to boost stocks, especially after the punishing selloff last week in semiconductors and tech shares.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cTechnology has been experiencing a period of June gloom, but that could easily reverse as earnings season approaches,\u201d said Brian Levitt, chief global market strategist at Invesco.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Overseas, the pan-European STOXX 600 was up 0.92 per cent in morning trading. Britain\u2019s FTSE 100 rose 1.01 per cent, Germany\u2019s DAX advanced 1.21 per cent and France\u2019s CAC 40 gained 0.49 per cent.\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">In Asia, Japan\u2019s Nikkei closed 0.86 per cent higher, while Hong Kong\u2019s Hang Seng declined 0.86 per cent. <\/p>\n<p>Commodities<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Oil prices steadied with investors eyeing potential U.S.-Iran talks in Doha amid a strained interim ceasefire in the four-month-old war.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Brent August crude futures were down 0.08 per cent to US$73.09 a barrel. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) was little changed at US$70.81 a barrel. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cInvestors are pricing in hopes of a positive outcome from the Doha talks, even though real normalization of flows through the Strait of Hormuz is not yet visible,\u201d said Tim Waterer, chief market analyst at KCM Trade.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cThe market is cautiously hopeful but still hedging its bets until we see more tangible signs of de-escalation,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">In other commodities, spot gold inched up 0.2 per cent to US$4,022.29 an ounce, after touching its lowest level since November 2025 earlier in the session. U.S. gold futures for August delivery lost 0.1 per cent to trade at US$4,036.50.<\/p>\n<p>Currencies and bonds<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The Canadian dollar weakened against its U.S. counterpart.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The day range on the loonie was 70.21 US cents to 70.43 US cents in early trading. The Canadian dollar was down about 2.8 per cent against the greenback over the past month. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The U.S. dollar index, which weighs the greenback against a group of currencies, rose 0.25 per cent to 101.35. The dollar was pegged at $1.4238. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The euro dropped 0.23 per cent to US$1.1397. The British pound slid 0.16 per cent to US$1.3236. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">In bonds, the yield on the U.S. 10-year note was last down at 4.371 per cent. <\/p>\n<p>Economic news<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">China purchasing manager surveys for June. Japan employment and industrial production data for May<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Germany employment and inflation data. France inflation and consumer spending data. Italy inflation data and UK GDP data<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">8:30 a.m. ET: Canada monthly real GDP for April.
