A German film starring Armie Hammer<\/a> that was allegedly denied a certificate by the German ratings board for \u201cinciting violence against immigrants\u201d has secured worldwide distribution and an explosion in its viewing figures after a bizarre intervention by Elon Musk.<\/p>\n

Citizen Vigilante, a thriller starring Hammer, and written and directed by Uwe Boll, was posted free on Musk\u2019s account on X from Thursday to Sunday, resulting in a major boost to its marketing and commercial profile. The film was released in the US on 19 June by Quiver Distribution, which according to Variety<\/a>, has now acquired worldwide rights. Musk also posted: \u201cCitizen Vigilante 2 will be even better.\u201d<\/p>\n

In an interview with the Telegraph<\/a>, Boll claimed that the film was denied a certificate by Germany\u2019s ratings board, the FSK (Freiwillige Selbstkontrolle der Filmwirtschaft), saying that \u201cit was a deliberate censorship decision\u201d. He said: \u201cI hired a lawyer to complain about it, but we lost in a six-two vote, as I was told that the film was inciting violence against migrants.\u201d<\/p>\n

In what Boll calls \u201ca harsh political movie\u201d, Hammer plays an American businessman who conducts a campaign of vigilante violence against criminals in a non-specific European country. Boll says he was inspired by a case in Hamburg in 2016<\/a> in which three teenagers who participated in gang rape were given suspended sentences. In a damning review<\/a>, Variety critic Todd Gilchrist called the film \u201ca violent, incoherent, morally bankrupt slice of exploitation\u201d and \u201cso astonishingly bad, it almost feels like [Boll] is deliberately sabotaging his star\u201d.<\/p>\n

Boll, who has regularly been called the \u201cworst director of all time\u201d and who claimed to have retired in 2016<\/a>, has directed over 30 feature films, including notoriously terrible video game adaptations Postal and BloodRayne.<\/p>\n

Musk\u2019s intervention has resulted in the film acquiring cachet in the ongoing culture war, in which Musk has regularly supported far-right anti-immigrant activists, most recently after the knife attack in Belfast<\/a> in June. Boll told Variety<\/a> that Musk had contacted the makers of his podcast Uwe Boll Raw to request the film. \u201cI didn\u2019t really chat myself with him or talk to him. It was very quick, you know. I think this guy, I don\u2019t know what he\u2019s doing per day, but I think his attention went like fast, you know. So, I felt also if we don\u2019t in a way agree to do it, he would\u2019ve just moved on.\u201d<\/p>\n

Before Musk\u2019s interest in the film, Citizen Vigilante had already courted controversy by casting Hammer in the lead, as the actor attempted to make a comeback after accusations in 2021 of rape and physically abusive behaviour. Authorities in LA county declined to pursue sexual assault charges against Hammer<\/a>, and he denied claims that he is a cannibal and that he sexually abused a number of women in interviews with Tyler Ramsay and Louis Theroux<\/a>.<\/p>\n
