But Lucida AI, a London-headquartered speech-to-speech coaching platform, believes the industry has been solving the wrong problem.

The company, founded in Istanbul in 2024 by Mustafa Girgin and Mustafa Sait Demirci, offers a mobile app for consumers and a secure enterprise product with on-premises hosting and end-to-end encryption.

Today, it raised a $7 million seed round, led by Velocity Capital, with Next Tier Ventures, Look AI Ventures, Bogazici Ventures, Yapı Kredi Frwrd Ventures, and Ünlü & Co also investing.

This follows a $1.25 million pre-seed round led by Turkey’s Neo Asset Management, bringing Lucida’s total funding to $8.25 million.

How the platform works

The idea behind the product is simple, but making it work is tough. Users just open the app and start speaking, all without typing, multiple-choice questions, or scripted drills.

Lucida’s speech-language model supports real-time conversations, adjusts to each user’s fluency, and provides instant feedback on pronunciation, clarity, and confidence. It covers everything from daily conversations to important presentations in another language.

For enterprise clients, Lucida offers on-premises hosting and end-to-end encryption. This is a key advantage in markets where data sovereignty matters.

In its first 15 months, Lucida reached over 3 million users and recorded more than 2.2 billion minutes of spoken interaction across Europe, the US, and emerging markets. The company surpassed seven-digit ARR, a milestone most seed-stage AI consumer apps do not achieve.

“AI is becoming a global race, and meaningful innovation is no longer tied to a single geography. With this round, we’ve partnered with investors who share our long-term vision. Our focus is clear: building a scalable, speech-native AI platform that powers global communication,” co-founders Girgin and Demirci said.

Why investors are interested

The language learning market is crowded, and each company takes a different approach.

Duolingo, valued at $6.15 billion in June 2026, uses gamified exercises to keep users coming back, but some say this doesn’t lead to real spoken fluency. ELSA Speak, which has raised $60 million, focuses on pronunciation coaching to fill that gap. And Babbel offers structured courses and now serves businesses too.

Lucida wants to cover all these needs by making speech the main way users interact, not just an extra feature.

“Lucida is building a speech-native learning platform with a phonetic engine that provides more accurate pronunciation feedback than generic AI tutors. With a seven-digit ARR, it’s on a clear path to becoming a category-defining company in AI-powered communication,” says Angelo Burgarello, partner at Look AI Ventures

“Lucida AI possesses the characteristics of the types of businesses that the Velocity EIS Technology Fund looks to invest in: a strong management team; capital efficiency; data-driven; international application; significant growth in a growing market, with a broad and mixed customer base. We are delighted to join the team on their journey,” notes Thomas Lindup, COO at Velocity Capital

“We believe AI’s next frontier is seamless human communication. Lucida AI is uniquely positioned to make that vision a reality on a global scale,” adds Patricia Pastor, GP at Next Tier Ventures.

Market trends back up Lucida’s goals

The global online language learning market was worth $33.3 billion in 2024 and is expected to grow to $91.6 billion by 2030, with an annual growth rate of 18.4%, according to Research and Markets.

Lucida’s list of investors shows it has aimed for multiple markets from the start. Turkish investors such as Bogazici Ventures, Yapı Kredi Forward Ventures, and Ünlü & Co joined a UK-led round, suggesting that the Istanbul roots run deep in the cap table even as the company operates from London. Lucida is building for multilingual, cross-border growth rather than adding global features to an English-only product later

Lucida plans to use the new funding to add more languages and regions, expand its enterprise business worldwide, and accelerate product development.

Lucida’s biggest tests are still ahead as it moves into tougher markets, where languages are harder, enterprise sales take longer, and Duolingo has a big head start. With 2.2 billion spoken minutes already, the main question is whether speech-native AI will become the industry standard or stay a premium feature in a space where Duolingo’s free model leads.

Lucida AI has secured a $7 million seed round led by Velocity Capital, bringing its total funding to…

[15
62,45,49,48,137,3234,4472,44,2927,3585
post-771123","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-entrepreneurship","tag-ai","tag-business","tag-ca","tag-canada","tag-entrepreneurship","tag-funding","tag-london","tag-news","tag-startups","tag-uk
["GET
