We\u2019ve seen at least 41 tornadoes touch down across Canada<\/a> so far this year, with severe thunderstorms adding two twisters to that count in the past week.<\/p>\n

The heart of summer is prime tornado season<\/a> for much of the country, so this number is likely to grow in the weeks ahead.<\/p>\n

Tornadoes confirmed in Ontario, New Brunswick this week<\/p>\n

Officials with Western University\u2019s Northern Tornadoes Project (NTP) confirmed EF-1 damage near Glencoe, Ont., during a storm on June 25<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The twister packed estimated maximum winds of 145 km\/h as it tracked along a path measuring nearly 10 km long. Experts surveyed the track on foot and by drone, finding damage to barns, trailers, homes, and trees in the area.<\/p>\n

Another confirmed tornado touched down in southern New Brunswick the following day as a strong thunderstorm tracked into the province. The NTP posted on Bluesky<\/a> that someone captured video of the tornado as it churned up debris about 25-30 km southwest of Moncton. Further details are pending.<\/p>\n

Tornado season ramping up across Canada<\/p>\n

Alberta makes up a significant portion of the country\u2019s overall count so far this year, accounting for 21 of the 41 tornadoes confirmed across Canada.<\/p>\n

An average year produces around 65 tornadoes throughout Canada every year, with the Prairies witnessing roughly half of a typical season\u2019s activity.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s likely that a number of tornadoes go unnoticed and unreported due to the relatively sparse population throughout much of the country, though the NTP works to identify those hard-to-reach suspected tornado tracks.<\/p>\n

U.S. tornado count inching toward 1,000<\/p>\n

A rambunctious season continues just south of the border. The U.S. is the world\u2019s most tornado-prone country, averaging around 1,200 touchdowns each year.<\/p>\n

US Tornadoes Through June 28 2026<\/p>\n

As of June 28, the U.S. National Weather Service has confirmed 930 tornadoes from California to Vermont. The strongest was an EF-4 that struck Enid, Oklahoma<\/a>, on April 23.<\/p>\n

Illinois has been hit unusually hard<\/a> over the past few months, racking up nearly 20 per cent of all tornadoes confirmed in the U.S. so far this year.<\/p>\n
