We check labels, look for local producers, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.archdaily.com\/1037282\/unearthing-the-ground-the-politics-of-the-subterranean\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">investigate supply chains<\/a> in an attempt to understand <a href=\"https:\/\/www.archdaily.com\/984663\/what-is-the-environmental-impact-of-each-building-material\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">the impact<\/a> of our habits\u2014on our own health and on the planet.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"519\" data-end=\"868\">In architecture, however, this question still remains relatively marginal. Present in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldbank.org\/en\/topic\/extractiveindustries\/overview?utm_medium=website&amp;utm_source=archdaily.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">81 countries<\/a> and responsible for around a quarter of global GDP, it employs approximately 3.7 million workers. In Latin America, this relationship takes on a particular dimension. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.archdaily.com\/tag\/brazil\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Brazil<\/a>, Chile, Peru, and Mexico are among the main producers of mineral resources, and the expansion of the construction industry has turned mining into one of the silent foundations of regional economic growth.<\/p>\n<p>This economic importance is directly linked to the fact that much of the built environment depends on materials extracted from the ground. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.archdaily.com\/tag\/granite\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Granite<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.archdaily.com\/931982\/the-beauty-of-marble-in-interiors-and-facades\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">marble<\/a>, sand, and limestone form the physical base of contemporary cities. Granite, often used for countertops, flooring, and facades, is the most visible face of a much broader mineral extraction chain. At the same time, the expansion of extraction areas reorganizes local economies, puts pressure on water resources, and in many cases <a href=\"https:\/\/myrepublica.nagariknetwork.com\/news\/limestone-quarry-puts-chepang-community-of-raksirang-rural-municipality-in-trouble\/?utm_medium=website&amp;utm_source=archdaily.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">displaces entire communities<\/a>. In different parts of the world, opaque supply chains have also been associated with territorial conflicts, poor working conditions, and human rights violations, showing that the impacts of extraction go far beyond environmental boundaries.<\/p>\n<p>Brazilian cases make these conflicts tangible. In Minas Gerais, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mpmg.mp.br\/portal\/menu\/comunicacao\/noticias\/justica-determina-implantacao-de-plano-de-manejo-no-parque-estadual-de-sete-saloes-no-vale-do-rio-doce.shtml?utm_medium=website&amp;utm_source=archdaily.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">reports of granite quarrying<\/a> in Permanent Preservation Areas within the Sete Sal\u00f5es State Park expose the risks of extraction in sensitive ecosystems and the lack of enforcement.
