{"id":771569,"date":"2026-06-30T18:14:12","date_gmt":"2026-06-30T18:14:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/771569\/"},"modified":"2026-06-30T18:14:12","modified_gmt":"2026-06-30T18:14:12","slug":"edoardo-affini-gets-good-news-for-tour-de-france","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/771569\/","title":{"rendered":"Edoardo Affini gets good news for Tour de France"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At a time when it seems so many riders are having their seasons derailed by illness, injuries or crashes, some good news for Italian Edoardo Affini.<\/p>\n<p>After a frightening crash at the national time trial championships, he\u2019s received the all-clear and was cleared to start the Tour de France.<\/p>\n<p>The TT crash<\/p>\n<p>The Italian had been among the favourites for the tricolore before his race ended just six kilometres into the 40.3-km course from Santuario di Vicoforte to Barolo. Video of the incident appeared to show his front tire blowing off the rim before he lost control and crashed heavily, even tumbling over the guard rail.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the dramatic images, Affini remained conscious throughout the incident and was taken to hospital for precautionary checks.<\/p>\n<p>Medical examinations found no fractures, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teamvismaleaseabike.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Visma\u2013Lease a Bike<\/a> later confirmed he had escaped serious injury.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAffini crashed heavily during the Italian national time trial Championships and was taken to hospital. He never lost consciousness,\u201d the team said. \u201cExaminations at the hospital showed that no fractures were sustained.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Visma\u2019s Tour de France bid<\/p>\n<p>The 30-year-old has since recovered sufficiently to be named in Visma\u2013Lease a Bike\u2019s squad for the Tour de France, giving the Dutch team another key engine for the three-week race as it chases yellow with Jonas Vingegaard.<\/p>\n<p>The same can\u2019t be said, sadly, for Belgian <a href=\"https:\/\/cyclingmagazine.ca\/sections\/news\/wout-van-aerts-infection-was-far-worse-than-we-knew\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Wout van Aert<\/a>. The 2026 Paris-Roubaix winner came into Tour Auvergne-Rh\u00f4ne-Alpes bandaged after a seemingly innocuous crash while training. He even took a win during the stage race. But then, things got worse.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter his victory, his elbow became very swollen,\u201d Heijboer said. \u201cThe following morning there were signs of an infection, so we didn\u2019t hesitate and sent him back to Belgium. In a very short time the situation had worsened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Van Aert underwent surgery and has since been treated with antibiotics.
