Meanwhile, the act is still sending new music onto rankings, a half-century after its first chart appearance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAs <a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/music\/pop\/victor-willis-death-village-people-singer-ymca-writer-dies-74-1236285680\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">previously reported<\/a>, Victor Willis, the longtime lead singer and frontman of the costumed group, and cowriter of its enduring anthems \u201cMacho Man,\u201d \u201cY.M.C.A.\u201d and \u201cIn the Navy,\u201d died Tuesday (June 30) at age 74 following a brief illness, according to a post on Village People\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/RealVillagePeople\/posts\/pfbid0xxD3DjTy28dcnYWmktG8xG9DkwQS9Toiy5kqeUL6pbJaoqG7YmT9eW8cHY4fpGril\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Facebook page<\/a>. Willis famously performed as both a police and naval officer in the act.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tVillage People first reached Billboard\u2019s rankings in July 1977, with their self-titled project crowning <a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/t\/dance\/\" id=\"auto-tag_dance\" data-tag=\"dance\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dance<\/a> Club Songs (thanks to its four cuts) for seven weeks. The set entered the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/charts\/billboard-200\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Billboard 200<\/a> that October and charted for 86 weeks through 1979, reaching No. 54.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t1978 follow-up Macho Man became Village People\u2019s first top 40 Billboard 200 entry, rising to No. 24 in September 1978 and brought the group its first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/charts\/hot-100\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Billboard Hot 100<\/a> charted single: The title track hit No. 25 the same month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAlso released in 1978, Cruisin\u2019 gave the group both its first top 10 on the Billboard 200 (No. 3) and Hot 100, as \u201cY.M.C.A.\u201d danced to No. 2 the following February.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn 1979, Village People notched their second top 10s on each chart: Go West (No. 8) and \u201cIn the Navy\u201d (No. 3). The album also yielded the No. 45 Hot 100 classic \u201cGo West\u201d (which Pet Shop Boys covered for a Dance Club Songs No. 1 in 1993).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe act also achieved its fourth top 40 Billboard 200 title in 1979, the concert set Live and Sleazy (No. 32).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe group\u2019s totals: Seven entries on the Billboard 200, including two top 10s among four top 40 placements, and five visits to the Hot 100, including two top 10s among three top 40 hits.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tVillage People\u2019s beloved \u201870s songs have continued to shine on \u2014 and top \u2014 Billboard\u2019s charts <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/billboardcharts\/status\/1869525535887647129?lang=en\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">this decade<\/a>, with the group also earning its first four Adult Contemporary entries from 2020 through this week, via new recordings: \u201cIf You Believe\u201d (No. 25, 2020); \u201cMagic Christmas\u201d (No. 13, 2022); \u201cGoddess of Love\u201d (No. 20, 2024); and \u201cDisco Star,\u201d which debuts on the latest, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/charts\/adult-contemporary\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">July 4-dated survey<\/a> at No. 28.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tHoward Rosen, president\/CEO of Howard Rosen Promotion, is promoting \u201cDisco Star\u201d to radio, continuing a history of helping expose the group\u2019s releases. \u201cI had the privilege\u00a0of being involved with Village People when I was the senior vp of promotion at Casablanca Records,\u201d he tells Billboard, noting that he worked all of their top 40 Hot 100 hits. \u201cVictor Willis\u2019 talent and music were timeless.
