(Image credit: United Launch Alliance)<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-011baf6a-e559-4077-94f8-004061e9fd78\">Amazon Leo is the company&#8217;s broadband megaconstellation in <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/low-earth-orbit\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/low-earth-orbit\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/low-earth-orbit\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">low Earth orbit<\/a> (hence the name), which will eventually consist of about 3,200 satellites. It will compete with SpaceX&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/spacex-starlink-satellites.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/spacex-starlink-satellites.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/spacex-starlink-satellites.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Starlink<\/a> network, which has nearly 11,000 satellites at present and is growing all the time.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-011baf6a-e559-4077-94f8-004061e9fd78-1\">About 370 Amazon Leo craft have reached orbit on a total of 14 missions to date, atop three different rockets \u2014 the Atlas V, SpaceX&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18962-spacex-falcon-9.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18962-spacex-falcon-9.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18962-spacex-falcon-9.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Falcon 9<\/a> and Arianespace&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/ariane-6-rocket-record-breaking-launch-amazon-leo-le-03\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/ariane-6-rocket-record-breaking-launch-amazon-leo-le-03\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/ariane-6-rocket-record-breaking-launch-amazon-leo-le-03\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ariane 6<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>            You may like<\/p>\n<p>The Atlas V has been the most active of this trio, conducting 8 of the liftoffs for the megaconstellation, which was originally known as Project Kuiper. (The first of those Atlas V launches lofted two prototype satellites, not operational craft, which explains why Thursday&#8217;s mission is called Amazon Leo 8 rather than Amazon Leo 9.)<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-eaedb988-a725-4cda-9b2e-a68bf2dffa74\">The Atlas V flying on Amazon Leo 8 is the 551, the most powerful variant of the rocket. The numbers mean that it sports five solid rocket boosters, a 5-meter-wide (16.5 feet) payload fairing and a Centaur upper stage with a single engine.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/media\/img\/spc-logo-w.svg\" alt=\"Space\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"w-auto h-7 block w-auto mx-auto mb-4 h-[30px]\" data-component-name=\"Image\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The 29 Amazon Leo satellites going up on Thursday weigh a total of about 18 tons, tying the record for the heaviest load ever launched by an Atlas V.
