July 1 (Reuters) – Elon Musk on Wednesday denied a Wall Street Journal report that SpaceX showed investors and other \u200cstakeholders a prototype of an AI-focused device ahead of \u200cits blockbuster IPO. <\/p>\n
“Utterly false,” Musk said in a post on X, without elaborating. <\/p>\n
The \u200bJournal had reported, citing people familiar with the matter, that the prototype handset-like device was designed to run on a proprietary operating system, contained AI technology from xAI and would use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon \u200cchips. <\/p>\n
The report added that \u2060SpaceX had told some investors the project remained in its early stages, with the design still evolving \u2060and no certainty the device would ultimately be built. <\/p>\n
SpaceX has invested billions of dollars to expand beyond its core launch and satellite \u200binternet businesses, \u200bpouring money into AI infrastructure, \u200bxAI’s Grok large language model \u200cand plans for space-based computing as Musk seeks to position the company at the center of the AI race. <\/p>\n
SpaceX and Qualcomm did not immediately respond to requests for comment. <\/p>\n
Reuters reported in February that SpaceX had plans to develop a mobile device connected to \u200cits Starlink satellite internet constellation that \u200bcould rival smartphones. <\/p>\n
Musk said in January \u200bthat a Starlink phone \u200bwas “not out of the question at some point,” adding \u200cthat such a device would \u200bbe very different \u200bfrom current phones. <\/p>\n
Last month, Microsoft unveiled a prototype AI-powered badge device for workers featuring Qualcomm wearable chips, pitching it as \u200ban always-connected assistant \u200cthat uses AI agents, voice, a touchscreen and a \u200bcamera to help users complete tasks. <\/p>\n
