The Chicago Cubs have had a bit of an up-and-down 2026 season, and it got bad enough that, for a moment, it looked as if the Cubs might be sellers at the trade deadline.

Such rumors began because Seiya Suzuki was named as a potential trade chip, though that’s not likely to happen at all. Speaking of Suzuki, on July 1 during the 2026 season, he joined an exclusive club in MLB history.

As the Cubs announced, Suzuki hit the 100th home run of his MLB career, joining three other Japanese-born players with 100 homers in the Majors, all of whom are MLB legends in their own right.

Seiya Suzuki becomes fourth Japanese-born player with 100 HRs in MLB

“Seiya Suzuki becomes the fourth Japanese-born player in major league history to hit 100 career home runs,” the Cubs announced Wednesday.

Suzuki hit his 13th home run of the season on Wednesday against the San Diego Padres, becoming just the fourth Japanese-born player to hit 100 MLB home runs in his career.

The all-time leaderboard has Shohei Ohtani, the Los Angeles Dodgers‘ MVP and baseball legend, at 298 homers in his big league career, by far the most of any Japanese-born player.

Second place is Hideki Matsui at 175 homers, who played for the New York Yankees, winning the 2009 World Series MVP and being named to two All-Star teams during his 10-year MLB career.

Ichiro Suzuki is also above 100 homers, at 117 during his Hall of Fame career. He wasn’t a power-hitter, so the Cubs outfielder might be able to pass him within the next year on the all-time leaderboard.

Suzuki might be joined fairly soon by another Japanese-born slugger, as Munetaka Murakami has 20 homers in his career already in just 200 at-bats, and if he can stay healthy and play for a few more seasons, he should get there shortly.

But, for now, the Cubs outfielder has become just the fourth Japanese-born player in MLB history to hit 100 home runs, an impressive feat halfway through his fifth MLB season.
