Both men have had to work really hard to get to these rarefied heights, which are exceedingly difficult to reach and so easy to fall back down from. There is no verdant, undulating country club route to the Green and Gold Absolute title. It comes from bunkers, fists like cudgels, fighting at maximum capacity, and refusing to give up or give in.

Bruce is an exceptional example of this. From rugged Brownsville, Brooklyn, he follows the path already blazed by Mike Tyson, Shannon Briggs, and Zab Judah. Hard times don’t last, resilient people do. In an even earlier era, it contained even meaner streets, and the comedian Charlie Callas—who was born slap bang in Brooklyn on December 20th, 1927—quipped and perhaps even somewhat embellished: “I was brought up in a tough neighborhood. You could walk ten blocks and never leave the scene of a crime.”

Bruce, now aged twenty-nine, credits Mum and Dad for shielding him from trouble. His brother Michael wasn’t so fortunate. On the way to the store to buy a video in 2014, Mike was gunned down at random, in what Bruce thinks could have been a gangland initiation ceremony to kill an innocent bystander. Bruce, who wears the badge “Forever Mike” on his trunks, always remembers his brother, saying: “Losing him made me realize how fragile life is. For me, Mike is everywhere I go. You gotta make the most of everything.”

Yet for a while, Bruce almost lost his way and was thinking of hanging up his gloves. He wrongly thought that pure talent would get him by in his amateur career, minus the long hard slog. Then, he realized after some defeats that he wasn’t being honest with himself, there were no shortcuts, and it was high time he knuckled down with devotion and focus if he ever wanted to reach the top. Bruce re-dedicated himself, slimming from 132 to 125 pounds, winning the New York Golden Gloves twice, and then winning the Olympic trials, defeating all opponents. But the pandemic altered the landscape, and he made the difficult decision to end his amateur career and enter the pro ranks in October of 2021.

Bruce immediately showed talent and wondrous potential, which caught the eye, attention, and admiration of boxing old hands—so much so that The Ring Magazine named him Prospect of the Year in 2023. His ever-more-impressive progression involved winning the NABF featherweight title and the WBC Silver title. His biggest test up to that point was defeating Sulaiman Segawa for those NABF and Silver titles via MD. Then came the Interim WBC title, defeating Mateus Heita by UD. By the time Stephen Fulton vacated the Absolute title to fight WBC Super-Featherweight Champion O’Shaquie Foster, Bruce was ready, qualified, yearning, and hungry to fight for the vacant title against Carlos Castro at Madison Square Garden, knocking him out in round nine.

Bruce is keen to take on the other featherweight titleholders: Brandon Figueroa of the WBA, Angelo Lee of the IBF, and Rafael Espinoza of the WBO. Both Rafael and he are promoted by Top Rank. But standing in his way is Rene Palacios, who is a talented young prospect ranked number ten by the WBC. Bruce’s pro record is 17-0 with 10 KOs. Rene, who at aged twenty-five is four years younger, is from Chihuahua, Mexico. His debut was in 2019 and his record is 19-0-1 with 10 KOs. He has also fought and defeated Sulaiman Segawa, winning by split decision. This was for the NABF title in January and earned him his opportunity. So far, Rene has fought eighty-eight rounds. Bruce has fought one hundred and three rounds.

The old-timers would nod sagely and say fighters with these brief records haven’t dipped their toes into the fight cauldron or served their toiling apprenticeships. The counter-punch response to this is that many of today’s boxers have had sterling amateur careers before entering the pro ranks, and today’s matchmaking gets them to the championship opportunity that much sooner. Shorter careers mean the potential to enjoy healthier retirements. Harry Greb fought and won forty-eight fights in 1919 alone. Yet he died bereft, aged thirty-two in 1926 on the operating table, in a futile surgical attempt to repair serious nose injuries. He was already blind in one eye from a gouging, unattached gloved thumb. The good old, bad old days.

This will be a step up in boxing calibre for Rene, who, being left-handed, is nicknamed “Zurdo.” Bruce is nicknamed “Shu Shu”—mostly to distinguish him from his dad, Bruce Sr. The name also has Egyptian origins, meaning “The one who rises up.” But the main issue here and now involves not nicknames, but reach. Rene’s reach is sixty-seven inches, while Bruce’s wingspan is seventy-two inches. That’s a five-inch difference. For tangible success, Rene will need to close the range and aggressively fight on the inside, trying to prevent Bruce from picking him off from the outside. Rene must try to fly within that albatross wingspan.

Rene appears to be the so-called underdog. But as with the Chihuahua, it’s not the size of the dog, rather it’s the extent and spirit of fight within it. Alan Turing, who solved the puzzle of the Enigma code, shortened the Second World War by two years and saved millions of lives, so aptly said: “Sometimes it is the very people no one imagines anything of who do the things no one imagines.”

It’s a question of boxing marksmanship in Ohio—The Buckeye State. While Rene knows, understands, and appreciates the magnitude of the challenge ahead and is going all out for it, Bruce—who has already said he wants to go on to one day fight Naoya “Monster” Inoue—is convinced his skills, firepower, and experience will win the day and handily defeat Rene. The long and short of it?

WBC Special Preview – Bruce Carrington vs Rene Palacios WBC Featherweight Championship Bruce Carrington vs Rene Palacios…

[447
703,49,48,82
post-774429","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-boxing","tag-boxing","tag-ca","tag-canada","tag-sports
["GET
