Russia launched a large-scale attack on Ukraine\u2019s capital Kyiv with missiles and drones overnight into Thursday, killing at least eight people and injuring dozens more.<\/p>\n

The intense strikes hit residential \u2060buildings and \u2060triggered \u200ba fire in a hotel on a central boulevard.<\/p>\n

Tymur Tkachenko, head of the capital\u2019s military administration, said eight people had been killed, \u2060with about three dozen locations across the city damaged in the attacks. He did not elaborate.<\/p>\n

Kyiv mayor Vitali Klitschko, writing on Telegram, said separately that 34 \u200bmore were injured, adding that among the damages, the first to \u200csixth floors of an apartment building \u200ccollapsed after a direct hit.<\/p>\n

Earlier he said that people were also \u200ctrapped in a damaged nine-storey residential building and a roof of another high-rise \u200bapartment building was on fire.<\/p>\n

Writing on Telegram, he urged residents to remain in shelters, describing an ongoing \u201cfurious enemy attack\u201d on the capital.<\/p>\n

The attack with ballistic and cruise missiles and drones affected all of the city\u2019s 10 districts, on both sides of the Dnipro River. Many residents took shelter at metro stations after the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy<\/a>, and other authorities issued the first warnings of the attack.<\/p>\n

Carrying children, belongings, tents and pets, people crowded into underground stations, as air raid alerts were issued for most of Ukraine\u2019s territory on Thursday amid \u200bRussia\u2019s worst attack on the country since mid-June.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnother horrific night for the residents of the city, who were forced to spend it in shelters,\u201d Olha Stefanishyna, Ukraine\u2019s ambassador to the \u200bUS, said in a post on X.<\/p>\n

Russia conducted \u2060the massive attack on Kyiv and other locations using \u2060long-range, high-precision air-, land-, sea-launched weapons \u2060and drones, the Russian \u200bdefence \u200cministry \u200csaid in a \u200cTelegram post on Thursday.<\/p>\n

The ministry added it hit military and \u200cenergy facilities around Kyiv, as well \u200bas military airports in several regions including in \u2060Poltava and Dnipropetrovsk, \u200bin what \u200bit said \u200bwas retaliation for \u200bUkraine\u2019s \u200cattack \u200bon \u200bcivil infrastructure.<\/p>\n

Zelenskyy had earlier warned that intelligence \u2060reports showed an overnight attack on the \u200bcountry was \u200blikely and said he \u200bwas cutting short his stay in \u200bDublin, which \u200che visited for \u200bthe \u200bstart of Ireland\u2019s six-month term in charge of the rotating presidency of the EU.<\/p>\n

Russia has intensified its attacks on Kyiv in recent weeks, even as Ukraine\u2019s own long-range drone campaign against Russian military sites and energy facilities has caused fuel shortages and disrupted supply lines inside Russia.<\/p>\n

Nato member Poland scrambled \u2060fighter \u200bjets \u2060as a preventive measure, \u200cthe \u200cPolish armed forces said \u200c on X.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese actions are of \u200ca preventive nature and \u200bare aimed at securing and protecting the \u2060airspace, especially \u200bin areas adjacent \u200bto the \u200bthreatened \u200bregions,\u201d \u200cthe post \u200bsaid.<\/p>\n
