{"id":776617,"date":"2026-07-03T00:42:08","date_gmt":"2026-07-03T00:42:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/776617\/"},"modified":"2026-07-03T00:42:08","modified_gmt":"2026-07-03T00:42:08","slug":"the-federal-governments-economic-footprint-is-shrinking-at-the-fastest-year-over-year-pace-in-30-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/776617\/","title":{"rendered":"The federal government\u2019s economic footprint is shrinking at the fastest year-over-year pace in 30 years"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">In last year\u2019s federal budget, Prime Minister Mark Carney promised to shrink the public service and boost defence spending. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">We\u2019re starting to see how those policies are playing out across Canada\u2019s economy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">When Statistics Canada this week released gross domestic product numbers for April, which showed a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/business\/economy\/article-canada-gdp-april-2026-statistics-canada\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/business\/economy\/article-canada-gdp-april-2026-statistics-canada\/\">healthy rebound<\/a> after months of sluggish growth, the agency noted the public sector contributed to the lift. Federal public administration, excluding defence, posted its first month-over-month increase since December, it said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Despite that gain, the sector experienced the sharpest yearly decline in real GDP since Statscan began publishing such data in 1997, shrinking by nearly 10 per cent from April, 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">At the same time, federal defence real GDP is rising at its fastest pace ever. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Measuring the economic output of public administration isn\u2019t as straightforward as other sectors such as retail or manufacturing because government services aren\u2019t bought and sold in a marketplace that establishes price and value. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">As such, Statscan relies heavily on public service compensation to gauge activity, and at the federal level, employee head counts are tumbling. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">In fiscal 2025-26, which ended March 31, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/politics\/article-not-all-departments-will-enforce-july-6-return-to-office-deadline-for\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/politics\/article-not-all-departments-will-enforce-july-6-return-to-office-deadline-for\/\">federal employment<\/a> fell by 3.5 per cent from the year before, the steepest drop since the round of job cuts implemented by then-prime-minister Stephen Harper in 2012-13, according to numbers released last week by the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">And that decline occurred despite a nearly 10-per-cent jump in employment at National Defence from the year before, as Canada ramped up military spending to meet the North Atlantic Treaty Organization\u2019s defence expenditure target of 2 per cent of GDP.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">While the monthly uptick in federal public administration GDP in April could mean the sector is stabilizing, the Carney government likely isn\u2019t done downsizing.
