The New York Knicks could stage one of the most explosive moves of the offseason as they look to pursue NBA all-time leading scorer LeBron James in an effort to defend their 2026 championship title.

Speaking during a Bleacher Report live stream, insider Jake Fischer revealed that the New York franchise has already made initial inquiries: “the Knicks have shown some interest in LeBron James.”

LeBron James’ agent reveals what finally pushed him out of LA

The bombshell development comes just days after ESPN’s Shams Charania reported that James informed the Los Angeles Lakers of his decision not to return for the 2026-27 season, officially opening the door to the next chapter of his career.

According to Charania, the 41-year-old icon would be willing to sign for the veteran’s minimum salary if it guarantees an immediate opportunity to contend for another championship.

Currently, the Knicks hold a $2.45 million veteran’s exception—a financial slot that would allow them to land LeBron without crossing the NBA’s punitive second apron. Following their title run, franchise owner James Dolan made it clear that he has no intention of breaching that strict tax threshold to keep the roster competitive.

This is far from the first time New York has emerged as a potential landing spot for James. Back in May, NBA insider Marc Stein highlighted the Knicks as a genuine destination, pointing to LeBron’s long-standing admiration for Madison Square Garden.

However, the sweepstakes will face fierce competition.

Rich Paul, the agent representing the four-time NBA champion, recently revealed he has engaged in talks with over a dozen franchises, including the Golden State Warriors. According to Charania, other teams monitoring the situation include the Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat, and Philadelphia 76ers.

Each suitor brings distinct financial flexibility to the table. While Golden State could offer an exception worth nearly $15.1 million, both the Knicks and 76ers can only tender a veteran’s minimum contract.

Even so, indications suggest money will not be the deciding factor.

Charania has reiterated that LeBron James will not base his decision on economics, while Yahoo Sports’ Kevin O’Connor reported that the veteran could recoup a portion of the sacrificed salary through a high-profile documentary tracking his season with his new squad.

Ultimately, what James seeks—as confirmed by Rich Paul—is a legitimate shot at securing another championship ring in what could be the final campaign of his legendary career.

In this scenario, the Knicks must convince him that, despite offseason roster shifts—including the departure of center Mitchell Robinson—the project spearheaded by Jalen Brunson remains formidable enough to capture a back-to-back title and serve as the perfect final destination for one of basketball’s greatest legends.

[434
49,48,459,82
post-776861","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-nba","tag-ca","tag-canada","tag-nba","tag-sports
["GET
