\u201cI\u2019ve talked about rain on this show more than I have in my entire life,\u201d Kittrell says.<\/p>\n
It was a constant consideration, both on set and in the writers room. Weather became a way to distinguish Elle from those around her in Seattle. The locals never carry umbrellas; Elle shows up with a pink one.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe had a writer from Seattle who always said the city gets a bad rap because of the rain,\u201d Kittrell says. \u201cBut the rain is what makes it beautiful \u2014 it makes Seattle green.\u201d<\/p>\n

That philosophy stayed with the writers, later showing up in a line Miles (Jacob Moskovitz), Elle\u2019s crush, says to her, and ultimately leading them to Garbage\u2019s \u201cOnly Happy When It Rains\u201d as the show\u2019s theme. \u201cWe were like, of course,\u201d says Kittrell. \u201cThis is what we\u2019ve been talking about the entire time.\u201d<\/p>\n
The song was originally meant to end the pilot. \u201cThen we decided we should just be hearing it in every single episode,\u201d says Neustadter. (The pilot instead uses Radiohead\u2019s \u201cCreep,\u201d which also bookends the series.) The main title sequence, an animated \u201csaga sell\u201d from the studio Shine<\/a>, tells the story of Elle\u2019s move from Bel-Air to Seattle.<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019re constantly reminding the audience of the contrast between Elle\u2019s essence and the world she\u2019s now in,\u201d Neustadter adds. \u201cThere\u2019s an optimism to \u2018Only Happy When It Rains\u2019 that feels very Elle Woods.
