Back in late February came the news that both Max Landis and Danny McBride had been hired by Paramount to develop two separate scripts for a new feature adaptation of the Hasbro toy brand \u201cG.I. Joe\u201d.<\/p>\n

Shortly after, the studio rejected Landis\u2019 version over creative differences but continued on with development of McBride\u2019s take.<\/p>\n

Appearing on the Happy Sad Confused<\/a> podcast this week, McBride confirmed that he has written a script for an all-new \u201cG.I. Joe\u201d movie and the plan is to begin shooting soon:<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve written one, yes. I\u2019m stoked about it. I\u2019m really fired up about the script. Paramount seems fired up about it, so hopefully we\u2019re shooting it next year.\u201d<\/p>\n

McBride adds that he was inspired by the cartoons and the comics, calling the franchise his childhood obsession:<\/p>\n

\u201cG.I. Joe was my thing when I was a kid. I liked that more than \u2018Star Wars,\u2019 more than anything. Like I loved G.I. Joe. and I still have all the characters.\u201d<\/p>\n

He says he originally approached Paramount with an idea for a film about the Dreadnoks, a group of mercenaries who worked for \u201cG.I. Joe\u201d villains Zartan and Cobra over the years.<\/p>\n

He was then told by the studio that they wanted to relaunch \u201cG.I. Joe\u201d before committing to any such project. So, he and his fellow \u201cThe Righteous Gemstones\u201d writers Jeff Fradley and John Carcieri sat down to come up with ideas.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe cracked something that we really love a lot, and, weirdly, it grounds G.I. Joe. It\u2019s not a comedy. It\u2019s suspense and action, and I think it\u2019s going to be a lot of fun.<\/p>\n

You\u2019re following Duke and a group of other Joes. There\u2019s that town in the comics, Springfield, which is a town that\u2019s secretly all Cobra. That is where our film takes place.<\/p>\n

We have some pretty interesting people lining up to be in it, too. I don\u2019t want to get ahead of myself, but it looks like it\u2019s going to be pretty fun.\u201d<\/p>\n

Three live-action \u201cG.I. Joe\u201d films have been made starting in 2009 followed by a sequel in 2013 and then a character-centric spin-off \u201cSnake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins\u201d in 2021.
