Andy Burnham<\/a> has announced he will keep the controversial pensions triple lock <\/a>when he becomes prime minister. <\/p>\n

The PM-in-waiting has been under pressure from some of his own economic advisers<\/a> to ditch the scheme, which critics claim protects wealthy pensioners at the expense of the young. <\/p>\n

He said he appreciated there was a \u201clot of debate\u201d about the pledge said it was \u201cimportant that the commitment in the manifesto stands\u201d.<\/p>\n

Labour\u2019s 2024 manifesto commits the party to the triple lock<\/a>, which protects the rate at which the state pension rises.<\/p>\n

In an Ask Me Anything (AMA) session on Reddit, he also ruled out an early election, said he saw scope for a better trade deal with the EU and chose the Martin Scorsese mob thriller Goodfellas among his favourite films.<\/p>\n

And he also received a question from the Tory leader Kemi Badenoch<\/a>, who suggested he should \u201cface a proper press conference\u201d. He replied that this was a \u201cfair challenge\u201d but added he had recently faced questions from 74,000 voters ahead of winning the Makerfield by-election. <\/p>\n

For someone who could be in No 10 as soon as 20 July, Mr Burnham has received little scrutiny over his policy platform and has given only one interview, with LBC.<\/p>\n

He ruled out an early election, adding that he would \u201cwork to the 2024 manifesto.\u201d<\/p>\n

But he did say he would campaign for one change in the party\u2019s next manifesto: proportional representation.<\/p>\n

He said he is a \u201cstrong supporter of electoral reform, partly because I believe it will enable the change to a more collaborative politics, and one that is less about point-scoring and more about problem-solving,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n

He added: \u201cI will seek to persuade my own party of the need for a manifesto commitment to it in the next manifesto.\u201d <\/p>\n

The party\u2019s 2024 manifesto instead focused its electoral and constitutional changes on extending voting to 16 and 17-year-olds and House of Lords reform.<\/p>\n

On foreign policy, he said he would back Ukraine \u201c100 per cent\u201d. <\/p>\n

Asked if he saw \u201cscope for negotiating a more ambitious trade agreement than the one we currently have\u201d with the EU, he said \u201cyes\u201d and pledged to build on the \u201cgood work\u201d the government has already done. <\/p>\n

He also promised to ensure the defence investment plan is \u201cfully funded\u201d, days after the blueprint, which led John Healey to resign as defence secretary, was finally published. <\/p>\n

On youth unemployment, he hit out at the \u201cmodern trend of only offering interviews on Teams or Zoom as I don\u2019t think that enables young people to get their personality and passion over.\u201d<\/p>\n
