The City of Colwood is looking for a partner to help expand its municipally run medical clinic as its unique health-care model continues to grow.<\/p>\n
The city has issued a request for proposals<\/a> seeking options for a larger clinic facility after nearly 2,000 residents have been connected with a family doctor since the Colwood Clinic opened in its current Latoria Road location in January 2025.<\/p>\n The clinic is growing from two family doctors to four this year, with a third doctor already joining the team and a fourth being recruited.<\/p>\n The city says the clinic is quickly outgrowing its current leased space at Royal Bay Commons.<\/p>\n Under the RFP, Colwood is seeking a development partner to help plan, design and deliver a larger primary care facility capable of supporting up to eight family doctors, along with medical office staff.<\/p>\n The city is inviting proposals that could include a new building, a buildout of existing space or leasing a suitable commercial building.<\/p>\n Officials say the goal is to create a modern, long-term primary care clinic that can keep serving the city\u2019s growing population.<\/p>\n RELATED: A third Island municipality is preparing to open a medical clinic<\/a><\/p>\n The expansion announcement comes after the city welcomed Dr. Denis McDonnell as the clinic\u2019s third family doctor.<\/p>\n McDonnell recently moved from the United Kingdom after growing up in Ireland and will begin accepting new patients the first week of July.<\/p>\n The city expects each physician to care for roughly 1,250 patients. With three doctors in place and a fourth expected to join soon, the clinic\u2019s capacity is projected to grow to approximately 5,000 patients over the coming year, up from nearly 2,000 currently receiving care.<\/p>\n Colwood launched the clinic after finding itself without a single family physician offering care within city limits, working with B.C.\u2019s Ministry of Health and Island Health to establish a municipal clinic model<\/a> that hires doctors as city employees.<\/p>\n
