{"id":778367,"date":"2026-07-03T20:38:10","date_gmt":"2026-07-03T20:38:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/778367\/"},"modified":"2026-07-03T20:38:10","modified_gmt":"2026-07-03T20:38:10","slug":"neptunes-odd-moon-may-be-the-only-survivor-of-its-violent-past","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/778367\/","title":{"rendered":"Neptune&#8217;s odd moon may be the only survivor of its violent past"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Nereid, one of Neptune\u2019s odder moons, may have formed right where it orbits rather than drifting in from the icy outer solar system, according to a new study. <\/p>\n<p>The James Webb Space Telescope took the first detailed reading of its surface, and the chemistry looked nothing like a captured world.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/earthsnap.onelink.me\/3u5Q\/ags2loc4\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">&#13;<br \/>\n    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fit-picture\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/earthsnap-banner-news.webp.webp\" alt=\"EarthSnap\"\/>&#13;<br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<p>If the idea holds, Nereid would be the last intact survivor of Neptune\u2019s original family of moons.<\/p>\n<p>The family was wrecked billions of years ago when a large intruder crashed the system.<\/p>\n<p>That would hand researchers a rare, undisturbed clue about how moons form around giant planets.<\/p>\n<p>Neptune\u2019s strangest moon yet<\/p>\n<p>Almost all of Neptune\u2019s moons look like strays. They are small and follow wide, stretched-out orbits. <\/p>\n<p>Those traits are the hallmark of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.earth.com\/news\/mysterious-surface-patterns-found-on-the-moons-around-uranus\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.earth.com\/news\/mysterious-surface-patterns-found-on-the-moons-around-uranus\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">irregular satellites<\/a> that a planet captured long after it formed, rather than moons that grew from the same disk of gas and dust. <\/p>\n<p>Nereid is the third largest of those moons, and it wears the captured label awkwardly. Its orbit swings so far that its farthest point is nearly seven times farther away than its closest point. <\/p>\n<p>A single lap around Neptune takes about 360 days, nearly a full Earth year. <\/p>\n<p>A moon with many mysteries<\/p>\n<p>Matthew Belyakov, a planetary science graduate student at the California Institute of Technology (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.caltech.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Caltech<\/a>), led the team that took a closer look. <\/p>\n<p>Astronomers have followed Nereid since Gerard Kuiper discovered it in 1949, yet its basic traits remain elusive. <\/p>\n<p>The only close-up anyone has is a blurry gray smear from Voyager 2, the lone spacecraft to reach Neptune, in 1989. Nereid is thought to be roughly 220 miles across.<\/p>\n<p>Even its exact size and spin rate remain uncertain, as one long-running study of its flickering brightness found.<\/p>\n<p>Nereid\u2019s icy surface<\/p>\n<p>Belyakov\u2019s team pointed Webb\u2019s near-infrared spectrograph at Nereid, splitting its faint reflected light into a spectrum that reveals which molecules sit on the surface. <\/p>\n<p>The dominant fingerprint was water ice, and plenty of it, locked in the ordered, crystalline form.<\/p>\n<p>One detail stood out. Across the range Webb measured, Nereid reflected more blue light than red.<\/p>\n<p>This is the opposite of nearly every icy body in the outer solar system, which reddens as sunlight alters their surfaces over time.<\/p>\n<p>The team also detected carbon dioxide frozen on the surface, but no sign of the tarry organic compounds that coat most Kuiper Belt worlds. <\/p>\n<p>That absence is especially striking because objects from the Kuiper Belt, the ring of frozen debris beyond <a href=\"https:\/\/www.earth.com\/news\/auroras-captured-on-neptune-for-the-first-time-thanks-to-the-webb-telescope\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.earth.com\/news\/auroras-captured-on-neptune-for-the-first-time-thanks-to-the-webb-telescope\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Neptune<\/a>, almost always carry those organics.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing like Kuiper Belt objects<\/p>\n<p>When the astronomers compared Nereid with 54 Kuiper Belt objects that Webb had already measured, it matched none of them.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, it more closely resembled the icy moons of Uranus, worlds thought to have formed in place. That mismatch reopened a question long treated as settled.<\/p>\n<p>Nereid\u2019s surface reflects about a quarter of the light that hits it, making it brighter than a typical Kuiper Belt object of similar size. <\/p>\n<p>No one had previously measured Nereid\u2019s surface chemistry in this level of detail.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat we found was an object that was highly water-rich on the surface, brighter than a lot of Kuiper Belt objects, and with some presence of CO2,\u201d said Belyakov.<\/p>\n<p>When Neptune\u2019s moons collided<\/p>\n<p>That homegrown origin creates a problem because Neptune\u2019s original regular moons were expected to be long gone. <\/p>\n<p>One obvious suspect is Triton, Neptune\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.earth.com\/news\/why-jupiters-giant-moons-survived-but-saturns-didnt\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">giant moon<\/a>, which circles the planet backward and contains more than 99 percent of the mass in the entire satellite system.<\/p>\n<p>That backward, tilted orbit marks Triton as an outsider. Most researchers think Neptune captured it from the Kuiper Belt early in the solar system\u2019s history. <\/p>\n<p>Its arrival would have disrupted whatever moons were already orbiting Neptune, crushing some and flinging others into deep space.<\/p>\n<p>A survivor from the chaos?<\/p>\n<p>Belyakov and his colleagues ran computer simulations of that violent period, roughly the first 100 to 200 million years of the solar system.<\/p>\n<p>The goal was to see what a newcomer like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.earth.com\/news\/how-did-earth-get-its-moon-a-new-theory-has-emerged\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Triton<\/a> would do to an established family of moons. In a meaningful share of the simulations, at least one original moon survived the chaos. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the cases where Triton survives, rather than get destroyed or kicked into Neptune, around 25 percent of the time one or more moons can survive the Triton encounter on distant orbits,\u201d said Belyakov.<\/p>\n<p>Those surviving moons ended up on wide, elongated orbits that closely match the path Nereid follows today. The idea builds on earlier modeling of Neptune\u2019s chaotic moon system.<\/p>\n<p>One study showed that a passing planet-sized body could scatter Neptune\u2019s original moons onto wide, stretched-out, Nereid-like orbits.<\/p>\n<p>It could even leave a large moon on a Triton-like backward path. In Belyakov\u2019s view, Nereid may be the only original moon that survived intact.<\/p>\n<p>The mystery isn\u2019t solved<\/p>\n<p>The claim is not airtight, and Belyakov readily acknowledges that.
