{"id":779424,"date":"2026-07-04T08:28:14","date_gmt":"2026-07-04T08:28:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/779424\/"},"modified":"2026-07-04T08:28:14","modified_gmt":"2026-07-04T08:28:14","slug":"future-of-sneaky-dees-appears-safe-after-proposal-to-redevelop-land-withdrawn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/779424\/","title":{"rendered":"Future of Sneaky Dee&#8217;s appears safe after proposal to redevelop land withdrawn"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It appears that a proposed development, which had threatened the future of an iconic downtown restaurant and dive bar, is no longer moving forward.<\/p>\n<p>Documents submitted on Friday to <a href=\"https:\/\/secure.toronto.ca\/council\/agenda-item.do?item=2026.TE34.23\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Toronto and East York Community Council<\/a> by the developer indicate they no longer wish to go ahead with a proposed 16-storey development at Bathurst and College streets, which has been home to Sneaky Dee\u2019s for the past 36 years.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.toronto.ca\/legdocs\/mmis\/2026\/te\/comm\/communicationfile-216799.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">letter from Michael Goldberg<\/a>, the principal of the Goldberg Group, which is behind the development, says they have been instructed to \u201cformally withdraw the subject application\u201d from the July 8 Community Council agenda.<\/p>\n<p>No reason was given for the decision, but a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.toronto.ca\/legdocs\/mmis\/2026\/te\/comm\/communicationfile-216798.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">subsequent letter sent by Globe Realty Holdings Ltd.<\/a>, which is a subsidiary of RBC, claims a parcel of land that is part of the proposal is owned by the bank and that they have not been approached about being part of the redeveloped site.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRBC has no agreement of purchase and sale or any agreement of any kind with respect to disposal of its lands at 429 College Street,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.toronto.ca\/legdocs\/mmis\/2026\/te\/comm\/communicationfile-216798.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">reads the letter<\/a>, which also points out that RBC currently operates a retail branch at the site in question \u201cand intends to carry on with this use.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn the basis of the foregoing, RBC objects to the recommendations in the Planning Division report and to any official plan redesignation and\/or zoning amendment on these lands.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Community members <a href=\"https:\/\/toronto.citynews.ca\/2026\/05\/28\/community-urges-city-hall-to-choose-sneaky-dees-over-condos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">passionately defended the future of the bar<\/a> in late May during a meeting at City Hall, and local councillor Dianne Saxe agreed to work with the group to try and find a solution that would satisfy all of the stakeholders.
