White Rock South Surrey boys of summer win 2 gold medals at weekend tourney<\/p>\n

Two White Rock South Surrey Baseball Association teams proved themselves golden at a weekend tournament, bringing home two gold medals in their respective divisions.<\/p>\n
The WRSSBA 15U AA and 13U A teams won the first-place finishes at the Steve Dodds Memorial All Star Tournament, held June 26-30 at Lionel Courchene Park in Surrey.<\/p>\n
Led by head coach Greg Funk, the 15U AA squad went undefeated (5-0-0) the entire tournament, a WRSSBA email noted, marking the second tournament gold win this season for the team.<\/p>\n
They previously also won gold at the Kamloops River City Classic in May.<\/p>\n
Funk was proud of his athletes after the weekend competition.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur guys played very well in all aspects of the games,\u201d he said. \u201cWe had strong pitching, the bats were lively and we were defensively sound. We took a business-like approach to the tournament and it worked out for us. It was a lot of fun!\u201d<\/p>\n
It was also the first-ever tournament for the newly formed summer 13U A squad. Led by head coach Ian Atkinson, they won gold with a 4-0-1 tournament record.<\/p>\n
They next play the Rumble in the Ridge tournament in Maple Ridge July 9.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was great to see the hard work paying off. We\u2019ve been working very hard on our defensive structure and it showed throughout the tournament,\u201d Atkinson said.<\/p>\n
\u201cMore importantly, we\u2019re proud of the way they competed. There were a few tight games along the way, but they maintained their composure and trusted themselves and their teammates to get the job done.
