The Volkswagen GTI has been appeasing hot hatch lovers since the mid seventies worldwide and since 1979 here in the Great White North (fun fact: Canada got the GTI a couple years before America did).

And no, it wasn’t the very first incarnation of the hot hatch, but it definitely helped popularize and define the segment ever since its inception, and still does today. And who knew a practical performance car for the masses could be successful? Certainly not VW, as they only pegged a production run of 5,000 Mk1 GTIs, far less than the 460,000 they ended up making to satisfy global demand. Talk about being humble.

Ever the wolf in sheep’s clothing

The GTI was never raunchy or overly flashy, and it continues into this latest Mk8.5 refresh with the same ethos that garnered it critical acclaim throughout its storied life. Still based on the humble Golf, the GTI spruces things up visually with some signature red accents on the grille and headlights, a more aggressive front bumper and side sills and a dual exhaust out back.

The average grocery shopper won’t spot it in a parking lot like you might a bright blue Elantra N, but that’s the point. The GTI is for those who don’t want to be noticed. Although avid GTI fans will spot the lovely new 19-inch “Queenstown” phone dial wheels, which have that old-school vibe and hark back to the Mk5 GTI. I dig the whole vibe.

More powa baby! Oh wait….

That’s only for Europe, which gets a power bump to 261 horsepower. North America trudges along with 241 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque. But don’t fret, because that is more than enough, with the now DSG-only GTI feeling athletic at virtually any speed, once you let the turbo that’s attached to the 2.0 litre four cylinder do its thing. And guess what, the GTI uses regular old 87 octane fuel, no premium required or even recommended. People’s champ.

And I know what you’re thinking, but don’t lose too much sleep over the lack of a manual, it was never very good in the GTI, feeling vague and artificial, whereas the DSG is a poor man’s Porsche PDK, giving you incredibly snappy shifts up or down when you’re hustling the GTI on your favourite backroads. In keeping with tradition, the GTI remains front-wheel-drive, but all-wheel-drive can be had by upgrading to the pricier Golf R.

The GTI handles with the best of ’em, helped by the 15-way adjustable dynamic chassis control adaptive dampers on the Autobahn trim, which lets you give the GTI whatever character you’re looking for, be it entry-level luxury car soft or skateboard stiff. It’s a marvel that VW offers this sophisticated suspension setup on an affordable performance hatch.

The suspension is aided by 235-width Bridgestone Potenza S005 tires, which offer a confidence inspiring amount of grip. I wish the steering had as much choice as the suspension does, because its weighted decently but feedback is low so you’re sometimes guessing how much grip is available, although the GTI always remains rather predictable in its behaviour.

We’re getting there…

When the Mk8 GTI was released, there was a lot of debate on the new interior. Gone was the almost Audi level interior quality in favour of a more down-market approach, an obvious cost cutting measure. The biggest complaint was in the infotainment screen and functionality, with a poor UX design matched with a too slow processor that resulted in long start times, freezes and the occasional restart. I know this because I experienced all of it in my previous GTI.

Haptic buttons on the steering wheel didn’t help usability and neither did the puzzling decision to a) introduce a capacitive touch volume slider and b) not backlight it (what is night-time, anyway)? Same goes for the climate controls. Lucky for us VW listened, and at least backlit them for the Mk8.5, and even reverted back to real physical buttons on the steering wheel. See, it’s the people’s champ!

The seats are approximately perfect, with our tester finished in black cloth with red accents and a honeycomb like pattern that matches the front grille. They’re perfect because they provide robust bolstering while remaining soft, so they don’t kill you when you’re getting in but keep you there when you’re setting the tires on fire.

I’ve also noticed a general polishing of the software, with the larger 15-inch infotainment screen working very smoothly and intuitively. Even the active safety features have been fixed; my ’22 GTI would annoyingly disable most of the active safety features at the hint of any inclement weather with an annoying beep and a bunch of yellow warnings on the dash. Not once did I experience that in the latest version, despite multiple downpours during my time with it.

Your favorite GTI is still your favorite GTI

If you love a GTI, you’ll love this one. It has the performance you’re looking for, spacious front seats with loads of headroom front and rear, making sure you don’t bonk your toddler’s head on the roof getting him into the car seat (looking at you Acura Integra), and up to 977 litres of cargo space with the seats folded flat, enough to fit a 65-inch TV with the box.

At $41,295, it’s priced well in Canada, considering everything you’re getting. In this price range, the Elantra N might give you more attitude and performance, the Civic Si has a lovely manual gearbox that this no longer has, and the Subaru WRX has formidable all wheel drive platform, but none can give you the mature, complete package that the 2026 Volkswagen GTI offers. And that’s why it’s the people’s champ.

The people’s champ is back at it again.
