The resulting map reveals how galaxies have evolved since the universe&#8217;s infancy around 13 billion years ago and how they fall together in a vast structure called the cosmic web.<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/news.ucr.edu\/articles\/2026\/05\/11\/astronomers-produce-most-detailed-map-cosmic-web\" data-url=\"https:\/\/news.ucr.edu\/articles\/2026\/05\/11\/astronomers-produce-most-detailed-map-cosmic-web\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"> <\/a><\/p>\n<p>The cosmic web is the largest known structure in existence, home to countless galaxy clusters and clusters of clusters. The new research offers additional evidence of how the universe&#8217;s structural framework facilitated this transition.<\/p>\n<p>            You may like<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">&#8220;We show how the cosmic web helped shape galaxy growth before, during, and after that peak era,&#8221; study co-author and UCR astronomer <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/profiles.ucr.edu\/app\/home\/profile\/hhata003\" data-url=\"https:\/\/profiles.ucr.edu\/app\/home\/profile\/hhata003\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Hossein Hatamnia<\/a> told Live Science via email. &#8220;At earlier times, dense regions appear to be sites of rapid galaxy growth, while at later times dense environments are associated with the shutdown of star formation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">Such revelations come courtesy of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/cosmos.astro.caltech.edu\" data-url=\"https:\/\/cosmos.astro.caltech.edu\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">COSMOS-Web<\/a>, the grandest JWST survey yet: a 255-hour program spanning a contiguous area of the sky about the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/news.ucr.edu\/articles\/2026\/05\/11\/astronomers-produce-most-detailed-map-cosmic-web\" data-url=\"https:\/\/news.ucr.edu\/articles\/2026\/05\/11\/astronomers-produce-most-detailed-map-cosmic-web\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">size of three full moons<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">Get the world\u2019s most fascinating discoveries delivered straight to your inbox.<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">Compared with the previous COSMOS2020 survey, shared in 2021 and conducted by the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/hubble-space-telescope\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/hubble-space-telescope\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/hubble-space-telescope\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hubble Space Telescope<\/a> and other facilities, the JWST-derived COSMOS-Web boasts better redshift precision and includes more galaxies \u2014 including fainter, lower-mass and more-distant objects. It also shows that &#8220;massive galaxies in dense environments are more likely to be quiescent&#8221; \u2014 dying and quenched of their star-forming potential.<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">This may be because those galaxies are too massive, the team theorized. Once the dark matter halos that anchor galaxies grow to 1 trillion solar masses, they energize gas and prevent it from forming new stars. Additionally, active supermassive black holes quench star formation by energizing gas with their lethal, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/black-holes\/the-first-black-hole-ever-discovered-is-spewing-dancing-jets-at-half-the-speed-of-light\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/black-holes\/the-first-black-hole-ever-discovered-is-spewing-dancing-jets-at-half-the-speed-of-light\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/black-holes\/the-first-black-hole-ever-discovered-is-spewing-dancing-jets-at-half-the-speed-of-light\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">near-light-speed jets<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">Such &#8220;mass-related&#8221; star-killing mechanisms dominated up to around 7 billion years ago \u2014 around half the age of the universe, the team found.<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-2c8aae55-3398-4dd8-b961-66db54157663\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">In the more recent universe, star formation is dominantly quenched by the environment around galaxies, which may strip them of material or prevent cold gas from accumulating and coalescing into stars.<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">Thanks to JWST&#8217;s capabilities, the large-scale structure and evolution of the universe have been made clearer than ever, resolving blurry blobs into dim, ancient galaxies.<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">&#8220;The jump in depth and resolution is truly significant, and we can now see the cosmic web at a time when the universe was only a few hundred million years old, an era that was essentially out of reach before JWST,&#8221; co-author <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/faculty.ucr.edu\/~mobasher\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/faculty.ucr.edu\/~mobasher\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Bahram Mobasher<\/a>, a distinguished professor of physics and astronomy at UCR, concluded in a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/news.ucr.edu\/articles\/2026\/05\/11\/astronomers-produce-most-detailed-map-cosmic-web\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/news.ucr.edu\/articles\/2026\/05\/11\/astronomers-produce-most-detailed-map-cosmic-web\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">The <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/hhatam\/CosmicWeb\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/github.com\/hhatam\/CosmicWeb\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">catalog of 164,000 galaxies used to build the map of the cosmic web<\/a> is publicly available.<\/p>\n<p class=\"infoVerified-by tracking-[.02em] pt-2 text-base font-normal\">Hatamnia, H., Mobasher, B., Taamoli, S., Kartaltepe, J.
