A renewable energy company is exploring the idea of building wind turbines in Wellesley Township. <\/p>\n

Renewable Energy Solutions Canada (RES)<\/a> presented to Wellesley council at a Committee of the Whole<\/a> meeting in June. <\/p>\n

If approved, RES could construct up-to 30 turbines on properties in the townships, generating about 200 megawatts of power, enough to energize hundreds, if not thousands, of homes. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe believe the township provides an ideal opportunity for wind energy development,\u201d said Anita Ifeadi, development manager for RES. <\/p>\n

RES operates turbines across 24 countries worldwide, and has led projects in Ontario in Chatham-Kent and Oxford County. <\/p>\n

According to RES, energy demand in Ontario is set to increase by 65 per cent by 2050, signalling a need for more sources of renewable energy creation. <\/p>\n

However, wind turbines aren\u2019t permanent. If landowners agree to have a turbine installed on their property, the turbine is decommissioned after 20 years. <\/p>\n

While on the property, RES would pay the landowner to lease the land the turbine sits on, and the land owner would pay a portion of that back to Wellesley Township in the form of increased property taxes. <\/p>\n

Wellesley council were apprehensive to the idea, but allowed RES to explore the concept by installing an instrument to continue measurements and seeking consultation with residents. <\/p>\n
