Aatos Koivu<\/a> will ultimately continue his career in Finland.<\/p>\nSaku Koivu’s son has signed a contract extension with Turku, securing his short-term future there.<\/p>\n
It is a one-year agreement for the 2026-27 season.<\/p>\n
The young forward will therefore remain in his home country and continue his development before potentially joining the Montreal Canadiens organization full-time.<\/p>\n
The decision makes sense given his current situation.<\/p>\n
He continues to train with his team as well as on his own.<\/p>\n
Aatos Koivu’s Turku extension gives him a clear path to rebuild his Canadiens prospect stock<\/p>\n
He also appears to be genuinely determined:<\/p>\n
“I have a strong desire to show that I can do better”, Koivu said.<\/p>\n
This kind of mindset is always appreciated by an organization, but he will now have to back up his words with his play after a disappointing 2025-26 Liiga season.<\/p>\n
Another season to continue developing, away from the pressure of North American hockey.<\/p>\n
The Canadiens can continue to monitor his progress from afar. Staying in Turku allows Koivu to play a bigger role than he likely would elsewhere.<\/p>\n
I’m really looking forward to seeing whether Koivu can put together an excellent season and potentially work his way back into the Canadiens organization’s “A-tier” prospect conversation.<\/p>\n
