A new Chinese paper, investigating the issue, suggests a &#8220;pre-excavation detonation&#8221; could be the solution if there&#8217;s enough warning time.<\/p>\n<p>There may be millions of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/51-asteroids-formation-discovery-and-exploration.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/51-asteroids-formation-discovery-and-exploration.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/51-asteroids-formation-discovery-and-exploration.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">asteroids<\/a> in our solar system, with a tiny percentage of them posing a possible, very tiny threat to our planet. NASA and many other entities keep an eye on the skies, and continue discovering new asteroids, but have found no imminent threats yet; <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/apophis\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/apophis\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/apophis\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Apophis<\/a>, previously believed to be a small threat during its 2068 flyby of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Earth<\/a>, has now been ruled out as a problem for the foreseeable future.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-ae8e6ad1-3fbf-4f59-982a-90d1bd9ac173-2\">But Earth has been smacked by space rocks in the past, with even the moderate-sized <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/33623-chelyabinsk-meteor-wake-up-call-for-earth.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/33623-chelyabinsk-meteor-wake-up-call-for-earth.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/33623-chelyabinsk-meteor-wake-up-call-for-earth.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Chelyabinsk<\/a> incident of 2013 causing reported property damage near its blast site in Russia. And as the researchers of a new paper point out, asteroids tens of meters in size and larger have been tracked <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/stargazing\/watch-a-potentially-hazardous-asteroid-the-size-of-a-skyscraper-close-in-on-earth-live-online-tonight\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/stargazing\/watch-a-potentially-hazardous-asteroid-the-size-of-a-skyscraper-close-in-on-earth-live-online-tonight\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/stargazing\/watch-a-potentially-hazardous-asteroid-the-size-of-a-skyscraper-close-in-on-earth-live-online-tonight\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">flying safely<\/a>, but closely, by Earth.<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-02a026e9-179b-417b-8087-cbb19e04df74\">Assuming a theoretical space rock is on an imminent collision course and exceeds about 330 feet (100 meters) in size, simply blasting it (or even guiding it away) may not be a viable option, the researchers said in a peer-reviewed <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/spj.science.org\/doi\/10.34133\/space.0504\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/spj.science.org\/doi\/10.34133\/space.0504\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">study<\/a> in the journal Space: Science and Technology.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Traditional kinetic impact, or long\u2011term force deflection methods, offer limited energy and cannot achieve effective deflection within short timeframes,&#8221; the researchers said in a press release, adding they found few comprehensive analyses of how to do so. (<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/38700-nasa-history.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/38700-nasa-history.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/38700-nasa-history.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NASA<\/a> did successfully deflect an asteroid moonlet&#8217;s orbit with the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/dart-asteroid-mission\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/dart-asteroid-mission\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/dart-asteroid-mission\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">DART spacecraft<\/a> in 2022, for example, but that was a unique test case in space.)<\/p>\n<p>            You may like<\/p>\n<p>So the team, led by Xiaowei Wang from the China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology, instead proposed using one of two &#8220;defense modes&#8221; for large incoming asteroids.<\/p>\n<p>The first mode is a more simple impact detonation \u2014 simply put, smacking the asteroid&#8217;s surface to create a shallow crater, in which a nuclear device is exploded. The other mode is a &#8220;pre-excavation detonation&#8221;, or using a penetration device to create a deeper crater before exploding a nuclear warhead to &#8220;achieve deep detonation&#8221; in the interior of the asteroid.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/media\/img\/spc-logo-w.svg\" alt=\"Space\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"w-auto h-7 block w-auto mx-auto mb-4 h-[30px]\" data-component-name=\"Image\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The researchers&#8217; modeling included the energy of a launch vehicle, the velocity of the impact spacecraft, and changes to the velocity of the asteroid, in each of these two modes. The two modes were also tested against a &#8220;virtual threat asteroid database&#8221; assuming warning times of anywhere between one year and 20 years.<\/p>\n<p>All in all, assuming enough time is available, it seems the deep-crater method wins out. &#8220;The flyby pre-excavation detonation mode, due to its ability to autonomously select the cratering location and achieve deep detonation, offers stronger energy coupling,&#8221; the researchers wrote in the press release.<\/p>\n<p>Such an impact could &#8220;destroy&#8221; asteroids that are roughly 330 feet (100 meters) or of that range, and push away asteroids of a size reaching about 0.6 miles (1 km) by imparting a velocity change of roughly 1 m\/s in about 60 days.<\/p>\n<p class=\"vanilla-image-block\" style=\"padding-top:56.25%;\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/HwAxRYtVkr3nCc8suEpqaT.jpeg\" alt=\"a cube-shaped spacecraft with two wing-like solar arrays flies towards two large rocks in space\"   loading=\"lazy\" data-new-v2-image=\"true\" data-original-mos=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/HwAxRYtVkr3nCc8suEpqaT.jpeg\" data-pin-media=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/HwAxRYtVkr3nCc8suEpqaT.jpeg\" class=\"rounded-[var(--image--border-radius,0)] inline\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<p>In 2022, NASA&#8217;s Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) mission slammed into the asteroid Dimorphos, which orbits a larger asteroid named Didymos, and changed the binary system&#8217;s orbit around the sun. The researchers did not raise these considerations in the press release.<\/p>\n<p>They did, however, provide &#8220;recommended solutions&#8221; for when to use each of the two options. The shallow impact might be preferable &#8220;for emergency defense&#8221; on a huge asteroid if there is an extremely short warning time, because that mission is less complex. Otherwise, the &#8220;<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/a-tale-of-two-space-rocks-the-year-deep-impact-and-armageddon-smashed-onto-the-silver-screen\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/a-tale-of-two-space-rocks-the-year-deep-impact-and-armageddon-smashed-onto-the-silver-screen\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/a-tale-of-two-space-rocks-the-year-deep-impact-and-armageddon-smashed-onto-the-silver-screen\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">deep impact<\/a>&#8221; would be the way to go.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"How do you stop a large, threatening asteroid on its way to Earth?
