{"id":786737,"date":"2026-07-07T20:00:19","date_gmt":"2026-07-07T20:00:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/786737\/"},"modified":"2026-07-07T20:00:19","modified_gmt":"2026-07-07T20:00:19","slug":"thats-going-to-come-back-and-bite-us-former-nasa-chief-questions-artemis-moon-lander-plans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/786737\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;That&#8217;s going to come back and bite us&#8217;: Former NASA chief questions Artemis moon lander plans"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"elk-6e4357df-0171-439a-a317-c0bba2591753\">The former head of NASA is questioning the agency&#8217;s plans to return astronauts to the moon, asking whether the crewed landers selected for the Artemis program are the right vehicles to get the job done.<\/p>\n<p>Jim Bridenstine, who served as NASA administrator during President Donald Trump&#8217;s first term, joined Space.com&#8217;s Tariq Malik and co-host Rod Pyle on the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/entertainment\/space-movies-shows\/this-week-in-space-podcast-episode-214-moon-man\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/entertainment\/space-movies-shows\/this-week-in-space-podcast-episode-214-moon-man\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/entertainment\/space-movies-shows\/this-week-in-space-podcast-episode-214-moon-man\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">This Week in Space<\/a> podcast on June 12 to discuss his recently appointed position as CEO of Quantum Space and current events in the space industry. During the show, Bridenstine voiced skepticism about the architecture of NASA&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/nasas-ambitious-artemis-3-mission-includes-3-giant-rocket-launches-2-private-moon-landers-and-1-big-question-can-it-all-work-together\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/nasas-ambitious-artemis-3-mission-includes-3-giant-rocket-launches-2-private-moon-landers-and-1-big-question-can-it-all-work-together\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/nasas-ambitious-artemis-3-mission-includes-3-giant-rocket-launches-2-private-moon-landers-and-1-big-question-can-it-all-work-together\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Artemis moon landers<\/a>, both of which are trailing in development compared to the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/27824-orion-spacecraft.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/27824-orion-spacecraft.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/27824-orion-spacecraft.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Orion spacecraft<\/a> with which they&#8217;re being designed to fly.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-6e4357df-0171-439a-a317-c0bba2591753-2\">&#8220;The architecture is extraordinarily complicated,&#8221; Bridenstine said. He compared the Artemis plan unfavorably to NASA&#8217;s approach during the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/apollo-program-overview.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/apollo-program-overview.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/apollo-program-overview.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Apollo program<\/a>, which he argued was much less complex.<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-1722ced4-516e-4513-aeed-b7b4c5faeb4e\">&#8220;They designed that thing to be as simple as you could possibly make it, and because of that they were able to land on the moon eight years after John F. Kennedy declared that we were doing it,&#8221; Bridenstine said of the Apollo architecture.<\/p>\n<p>NASA has contracted both SpaceX&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/spacex-starship-super-heavy.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/spacex-starship-super-heavy.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/spacex-starship-super-heavy.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Starship<\/a> and Blue Origin&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/blue-origins-lunar-lander-mockup-is-ready-for-nasa-artemis-astronaut-training\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/blue-origins-lunar-lander-mockup-is-ready-for-nasa-artemis-astronaut-training\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/blue-origins-lunar-lander-mockup-is-ready-for-nasa-artemis-astronaut-training\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Blue Moon<\/a> to be the crewed lunar landers for the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-program.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-program.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-program.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Artemis program<\/a>, and plans to use one of them to perform the first Artemis moon landing in 2028, on the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/nasa-is-overhauling-its-artemis-program-what-does-that-mean-for-humanitys-return-to-the-moon\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/nasa-is-overhauling-its-artemis-program-what-does-that-mean-for-humanitys-return-to-the-moon\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/nasa-is-overhauling-its-artemis-program-what-does-that-mean-for-humanitys-return-to-the-moon\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Artemis 4<\/a> mission. That&#8217;s a tight timeline for <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18853-spacex.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18853-spacex.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18853-spacex.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">SpaceX<\/a> and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/19584-blue-origin-quiet-plans-for-spaceships.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/19584-blue-origin-quiet-plans-for-spaceships.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/19584-blue-origin-quiet-plans-for-spaceships.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Blue Origin<\/a>, whose spacecraft have faced ongoing delays in their development.<\/p>\n<p>            You may like<\/p>\n<p>Neither lander has managed to make it to orbit yet, and both have a number of qualification tests to accomplish before <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/38700-nasa-history.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/38700-nasa-history.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/38700-nasa-history.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NASA<\/a> will certify the vehicles to fly with astronauts aboard, including uncrewed lunar landing demonstrations. For some development perspective, Bridenstine brought up NASA&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/33908-space-launch-system.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/33908-space-launch-system.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/33908-space-launch-system.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Space Launch System<\/a> (SLS) rocket, which, though also severely delayed for years leading up to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/nasa-artemis-1-moon-mission-launch\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/nasa-artemis-1-moon-mission-launch\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/nasa-artemis-1-moon-mission-launch\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">its debut<\/a>, managed a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/nasa-celebrates-artemis-1-orion-success\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/nasa-celebrates-artemis-1-orion-success\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/nasa-celebrates-artemis-1-orion-success\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">completely successful mission<\/a> right out of the gate. &#8220;The first time SLS launched, it was rated for crew, and it was ready to go to the moon on the first launch. That&#8217;s hard to do, and yet it did it,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is the challenge,&#8221; Bridenstine said. &#8220;We still don&#8217;t have a lander, and without a lander, you can&#8217;t land on the moon. It&#8217;s really that simple, and I worry that over time that&#8217;s going to come back and bite us.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/media\/img\/spc-logo-w.svg\" alt=\"Space\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"w-auto h-7 block w-auto mx-auto mb-4 h-[30px]\" data-component-name=\"Image\"\/><\/p>\n<p>During NASA&#8217;s Apollo missions to the lunar surface in the 1960s and &#8217;70s, the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18422-apollo-saturn-v-moon-rocket-nasa-infographic.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18422-apollo-saturn-v-moon-rocket-nasa-infographic.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18422-apollo-saturn-v-moon-rocket-nasa-infographic.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Saturn V rocket<\/a> launched the astronauts aboard their return capsule, with their moon landing vehicle stowed beneath. Starship and Blue Moon will both require refueling flights in order to land astronauts on the lunar surface and then launch them back to orbit around <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the moon<\/a> to rendezvous with Orion. The exact number of refueling flights for each lander is unknown, but a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/nasas-aging-infrastructure-cant-handle-artemis-launches-without-usd1-billion-in-upgrades-watchdog-warns\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/nasas-aging-infrastructure-cant-handle-artemis-launches-without-usd1-billion-in-upgrades-watchdog-warns\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/nasas-aging-infrastructure-cant-handle-artemis-launches-without-usd1-billion-in-upgrades-watchdog-warns\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">recent report from NASA&#8217;s Office of Inspector General<\/a> estimated Starship will need at least 15 additional launches to replenish its tanks enough for a full lunar landing mission.<\/p>\n<p>Ahead of the planned Artemis 4 landing, NASA will launch a practice run with Orion and both of the two landers in <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/low-earth-orbit\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/low-earth-orbit\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/low-earth-orbit\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">low Earth orbit<\/a> (LEO) in <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/artemis-3-has-been-pushed-to-late-2027-can-nasa-still-land-astronauts-on-the-moon-in-2028\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/artemis-3-has-been-pushed-to-late-2027-can-nasa-still-land-astronauts-on-the-moon-in-2028\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/artemis-3-has-been-pushed-to-late-2027-can-nasa-still-land-astronauts-on-the-moon-in-2028\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">mid-to-late 2027<\/a>. That mission, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-3-moon-landing-mission\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-3-moon-landing-mission\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-3-moon-landing-mission\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Artemis 3<\/a>, will see the astronauts rendezvous and dock with both landers over the course of about two weeks. According to NASA&#8217;s current plan, Artemis 3 astronauts will have the opportunity to board Blue Moon during their mission, but Starship will fly with a docking adapter only, and not a functional crew cabin \u2014 a likely sign of Starship&#8217;s development progress, and what NASA expects of the spacecraft&#8217;s capabilities within the next year.<\/p>\n<p>NASA had previously tapped Starship as the lunar lander for Artemis 4, but its performance, as well as Blue Moon&#8217;s, during Artemis 3 could possibly spur a change in that decision.
