These weren\u2019t the usual people over 65. Instead, they were young adults who, at first glance, check the boxes for \u201chealthy.\u201d Yet each had been diagnosed with colorectal cancer.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"1\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">Most weren\u2019t obese. Some were marathoners. Some were vegetarians. Some didn\u2019t even take a sip of alcohol. Since Dr. Chan specializes in high-risk cancer genetics, he also checked to see if there was a family history of disease. Negative.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"2\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">Dr. Chan\u2019s situation is not an outlier. In fact, it\u2019s becoming more of the norm. According to the <a rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.org\/content\/dam\/cancer-org\/research\/cancer-facts-and-statistics\/annual-cancer-facts-and-figures\/2026\/2026-cancer-facts-and-figures.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.org\/content\/dam\/cancer-org\/research\/cancer-facts-and-statistics\/annual-cancer-facts-and-figures\/2026\/2026-cancer-facts-and-figures.pdf\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"2026 report\" data-node-id=\"2.1\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\">2026 report<\/a> by the American Cancer Society, the overall rate of colorectal cancer has gone down since the mid-1980s. But if you look at it by age, the rate has increased by 2.9 percent each year in people under 50. Plus, these cancers tend to be more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC9777335\/#:~:text=Early%20age%20of%20onset%20resulted,compared%20with%20late%2Donset%20CRC.\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC9777335\/#:~:text=Early%20age%20of%20onset%20resulted,compared%20with%20late%2Donset%20CRC.\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"aggressive\" data-node-id=\"2.5\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">aggressive<\/a> than those diagnosed at an older age.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"5\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">\u201cEarly onset\u201d patients used to make up less than 10 percent of Dr. Chan\u2019s caseload. Today it\u2019s more than double\u2014a trend he calls \u201ctruly stunning\u201d because they\u2019re his age or even 20 years younger. (Dr. Chan, professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, is in his 50s.)<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"6\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">It\u2019s become one of the decade\u2019s most disturbing medical mysteries: Why are more younger adults getting diagnosed with cancers historically linked to old age? There\u2019s a lot of opinions and not enough answers\u2014until now.<\/p>\n<p>Microplastics, Alcohol, Deli Meat\u2014What\u2019s the Cause?<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"8\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">THERE ARE A lot of trails to chase: Did we eat too many processed foods as kids and mess up our microbiomes? Ingest too many <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/health\/a70588776\/microplastics-prostate-cancer-study\/\" target=\"_self\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/health\/a70588776\/microplastics-prostate-cancer-study\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"microplastics\" data-node-id=\"8.2\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">microplastics<\/a> or absorb too many \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/health\/a42621421\/how-toxic-is-your-body\/\" target=\"_self\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/health\/a42621421\/how-toxic-is-your-body\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"forever chemicals\" data-node-id=\"8.4\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">forever chemicals<\/a>\u201d? Was it too many years of binge drinking or burning the midnight oil? Or something else entirely?<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"9\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">These questions are what prompted Dr. Chan to step up to be a leader of Team Prospect, a $25 million project funded by the National Cancer Institute along with research groups in the UK, France, Italy and India. Her team at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis found evidence that younger people with cancer were somehow aging faster than their peers. They crunched the so-called biological age of over 150,000 people\u2019s blood samples in the U.K. Biobank database.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"11\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">By looking at nine blood biomarkers, including creatinine, C-reactive protein, glucose and white blood cell count, they calculated that people who were born after 1965 had a 23 percent higher likelihood of accelerated aging than those born between 1950 and 1954.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"12\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">The evidence that their bodies were getting old faster was linked with the dramatic increase in lung, gastrointestinal, and uterine cancers. Her team\u2019s research has teed up the urgent question: If we could hold back abnormal cellular aging, could we hold back cancer, too?<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"13\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">Cancer has traditionally been seen as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8003441\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8003441\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"disease of aging\" data-node-id=\"13.1\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">disease of aging<\/a>. That\u2019s because as we add years, our bodies experience more oxidative stress and DNA damage, which can alter cells and lead to the growth of tumors. Also with age, the body gets less efficient at clearing out old \u201csenescent\u201d cells that can be inflammatory and fuel those tumors. Ultimately, our immune system\u2019s ability to fight those tumors weakens.<\/p>\n<p>Can Aging Clocks Help Us?<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"15\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">THIS NEWS OF cancer in rapidly aging younger bodies comes at a time when aging science is exploding. That\u2019s a good thing, since aging starts earlier than you think: Research by <a href=\"https:\/\/dms.hms.harvard.edu\/people\/vadim-gladyshev\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/dms.hms.harvard.edu\/people\/vadim-gladyshev\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Vadim Gladyshev, PhD,\" data-node-id=\"15.2\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Vadim Gladyshev, PhD,<\/a> professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School who studies aging clocks, lifespan control and age reversal, suggests that the aging process starts after our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/sciadv.abg6082\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/sciadv.abg6082\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"third week in the womb\" data-node-id=\"15.4\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">third week in the womb<\/a>. From there, people will naturally age at different rates throughout their lifetimes. While we still don\u2019t fully understand why, we\u2019ve <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/health\/a45081527\/epigenetic-biological-age-tests\/\" target=\"_self\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/health\/a45081527\/epigenetic-biological-age-tests\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"found ways to measure it\" data-node-id=\"15.6\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">found ways to measure it<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"16\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">In 2013, geneticist Steve Horvath, PhD, invented the breakthrough that made this conversation even possible: the epigenetic clock. While at UCLA, he published a landmark <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/24138928\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/24138928\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"paper\" data-node-id=\"16.1\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">paper<\/a> explaining that the so-called \u201cHorvath clock\u201d could estimate someone\u2019s age by using DNA methylation from any tissue and cell type in the human body. (Methylation refers to chemical changes that happen to DNA and are influenced by genetics, lifestyle and environment; there are 28 million locations in the human body where this can happen, and a quarter change with age.) His clock looks at several hundred of them to come up with someone\u2019s biological age estimate.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"17\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">A newer method has scientists measure someone\u2019s age-related changes through 10,000 plasma proteins in a fraction of a drop of blood, adds geriatrician <a rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/irp.nih.gov\/pi\/luigi-ferrucci\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/irp.nih.gov\/pi\/luigi-ferrucci\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Luigi Ferrucci, MD, PhD,\" data-node-id=\"17.1\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\">Luigi Ferrucci, MD, PhD,<\/a> who served as scientific director of the National Institute on Aging since 2011. He envisions a future in which we\u2019d get our biological age routinely measured\u2014maybe as part of an annual physical\u2014so doctors could identify people who are \u201caccelerated agers\u201d decades before they develop age-related diseases. Then, they could be closely monitored for cancer, heart disease, or diabetes.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"18\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">While science is getting more precise about how it measures our biological clocks, a new question is starting to emerge. Is it enough to to tell the full story of how the body handles aging? \u201cIt\u2019s a new understanding that our biological age can fluctuate,\u201d says Gladyshev. His team published a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cell.com\/cell-metabolism\/abstract\/S1550-4131(23)00093-1\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.cell.com\/cell-metabolism\/abstract\/S1550-4131(23)00093-1\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"paper\" data-node-id=\"18.1\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">paper<\/a> showing that someone\u2019s biological age increases during times of several stress\u2014like surgery, severe Covid, and pregnancy. However, this is temporary and biological age goes back down once they recover.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"19\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">How much we can drive it down is also up for debate. There\u2019s increasing evidence that we may not be able to push back as much on your biological age.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"20\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">Scientists know that smokers and obese people will age faster, but all those healthy lifestyle changes we\u2019ve been trusting to buy us more time might only pay off to a certain extent. \u201cThere are things you can do, but they reduce your epigenetic age by just a couple of years. They won\u2019t reduce it by 40 years,\u201d says Horvath, now principal investigator at Altos Labs, a longevity biotech company focused on cell rejuvenation therapies.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"21\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">In fact, Horvath\u2019s team developed what he calls the GrimAge Clock (that\u2019s geneticist dark humor for you) that looks at 1030 epigenetic locations. (It\u2019s available through his nonprofit <a href=\"https:\/\/clockfoundation.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/clockfoundation.org\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Epigenetic Clock Development Foundation\" data-node-id=\"21.1\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Epigenetic Clock Development Foundation<\/a>.) Horvath\u2019s chronological age is 56 and is a self-described \u201chealth nut,\u201d and the lowest it dipped recently was 52.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"22\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">During one year when his GrimAge was three years higher than usual, he buckled down and made every health change known to research: He cut out sugar and reduced his carb intake. He <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/health\/a71017626\/wait-do-i-need-a-statin-now\/\" target=\"_self\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/health\/a71017626\/wait-do-i-need-a-statin-now\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"started a statin\" data-node-id=\"22.1\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">started a statin<\/a> and added even more vegetables to his diet. After a year of sacrifices, he brought down his score\u2014but only by a couple years.<\/p>\n<p>Promise Prospects from Other Places<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"24\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">EVEN IF TINKERING with our biological age isn\u2019t as easy as we\u2019d like it to be, that hasn\u2019t stopped science from trying to find ways to stave off the damage of aging. \u201cThere\u2019s a lot of work being done to find an intervention,\u201d says Ferrucci. (The longevity research sector was projected to reach $600 billion by next year.)<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"25\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">Those include drugs that clear out old damaged senescent cells that can harm neighboring cells. (Several are in Phase 2 trials.) Other investigators are looking at repurposing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8613836\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8613836\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis\" data-node-id=\"25.1\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/31522175\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/31522175\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"diabetes\" data-node-id=\"25.3\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">diabetes<\/a> treatments as anti-aging drugs. Another compound <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC10609777\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC10609777\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"urolithin A\" data-node-id=\"25.5\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">urolithin A<\/a>, derived from gut microbiota, is being studied for its ability to fend off disease by increasing mitochondrial function to help age-related muscle atrophy. Finally, the molecule <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC9133775\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC9133775\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide\" data-node-id=\"25.7\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide<\/a> (NAD+) is being investigated for combatting age-related vascular disorders.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"26\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">All this is hopeful, and it softens the alarming possibility that some uncontrollable force may be hijacking our aging process with grim results. If the effects of aging can be forestalled, then perhaps disease can be, too.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"27\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">And while cancers are striking earlier, detection systems like blood tests are increasingly used to hunt early signs of many cancers. Some people are even undergoing full-body MRIs with the same goal in mind, although <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/health\/a70081827\/full-body-mri-vs-blood-test-which-is-better-for-detecting-cancer\/\" target=\"_self\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/health\/a70081827\/full-body-mri-vs-blood-test-which-is-better-for-detecting-cancer\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"neither is standard procedure\" data-node-id=\"27.1\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">neither is standard procedure<\/a> in mainstream medicine.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"28\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">Meanwhile, the rise in young onset cancer is a compelling reason to get screened on time, and push for an earlier screening if you have symptoms or are at high risk. For colon cancer, that means people at average risk should start getting colonoscopies at age 45. If someone in your immediate family (sibling, child, parent) had colorectal cancer, you need to talk with your physician about getting screened before that.
