The World Cup is sparking and renewing a passion for soccer in many New Yorkers. However, it’s important to be safe if you are planning to play on the pitch.<\/p>\n
Dr. Salvador Portugal, a rehab specialist at NYU Langone Health and a former college soccer player himself, joined NY1 anchor Shannan Ferry on \u201cNews All Day\u201d to share some tips for safe play. He said it\u2019s important for players of all ages to listen to their bodies.<\/p>\n
\u201cPain can be a very helpful tool to give you information,\u201d Dr. Portugal said. \u201cIt can be a sign that there is something that could be an ACL tear.\u201d<\/p>\n
Other common soccer injuries include ankle and hamstring sprains and concussions.<\/p>\n
However, Dr. Portugal says the risk of injury should not dissuade people from playing soccer.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s more important to exercise than not to exercise,\u201d Dr. Portugal said.<\/p>\n
