Fed heifers were up $3.46 per cwt. from the week prior, closing the week at $354.40 per cwt.<\/p>\n<p>Seasonally, the Western Canadian fed market tends to reach its peak by now, with prices moving lower during the second half of the year, but this is not the case this year.<\/p>\n<p>Dressed sales were reported in the range of $595-600 per cwt. delivered, $3-8 per cwt. higher than the week before. Cattle that traded were scheduled for be picked up in two weeks.<\/p>\n<p>In Ontario, the fed market was steady to stronger. Dressed sales were reported in the range of $570-580 per cwt. delivered, which was steady to $10 per cwt. stronger than the week before. Cattle that sold were set to be delivered within the next one to two weeks.<\/p>\n<p>The Eastern Canadian fed market is anticipated to peak very soon, based on historical trends, with the summer bringing steady prices.<\/p>\n<p>Non-fed prices still strong<\/p>\n<p>Prices for non-fed cattle in Western Canada remained strong during the week ending June 26, with Alberta butcher bulls bringing more than $290 per cwt. for the first time on record.<\/p>\n<p>Alberta D2 cow prices rose $2 per cwt. to close the week at $253 per cwt., and D3 cows strengthened by $6.50 per cwt. to finish the week at $235 per cwt.<\/p>\n<p>In Ontario, D2 cows brought $240 per cwt., steady with the previous week. D3 cows closed the week at $202 per cwt., up $2 per cwt. from the week before.<\/p>\n<p>Seasonally, Eastern Canadian cow prices tend to strengthen in summer and reach their peak in August.<\/p>\n<p>Canadian cow slaughter for week ending June 20 totalled 6,888 head, moving higher. In Eastern Canada, cow slaughter for the week totalled more than 2,000 head, up from the seven-week average of below 1,600 head.<\/p>\n<p>In the past two years, cow slaughter as a percentage of total slaughter fell below 10 per cent at different times throughout the summer. Cow slaughter as a percentage of total slaughter has averaged 13 per cent over the past month.<\/p>\n<p>Feeder prices near record highs<\/p>\n<p>Western Canadian calf and feeder prices were hot during the week ending June 26, holding close to or at record highs.<\/p>\n<p>South of the border, the U.S. feeder index established new highs.<\/p>\n<p>Deferred live cattle contracts rallied, now back to within $3 per cwt. of their contract highs, and lower feed grain prices were reported across Canada. This has supported demand for both bunk replacements and grass cattle.<\/p>\n<p>The forward delivery calf market was lightly tested, and like last June, most calves being sold via forward contract were steers, with some heifers offered for fall delivery.<\/p>\n<p>Steers from B.C., Alberta and Saskatchewan weighing between 600-699 pounds for October delivery traded in the range of $668-688 per cwt., with a weighted average price of $683 per cwt. based at 647 lb. This was more than $20 per cwt. stronger than in late May and early June.<\/p>\n<p>Buyers from Eastern Canada remain active on forward delivery calf market.<\/p>\n<p>Cow-calf pairs continue to bring strong prices, with mature cows with good calves at side trading for upwards of $6,500-7,000 per pair.<\/p>\n<p>Cutouts mixed<\/p>\n<p>U.S. cutout values were mixed during the week ending June 26.<\/p>\n<p>Choice cutout prices rallied mid-week to reach $400 per cwt. for the first time since the middle of March. By the end of the week, though, prices fell to just more than $396 per cwt. This was up $2.50 per cwt. from the previous week and $2 per cwt. higher than this time last year.<\/p>\n<p>Select cutouts were steady with the week before, closing near $375 per cwt.
