The deal is worth $50 million, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/tokyobrief.com\/articles\/ispace-spacex-starship-lunar-cargo-deal\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/tokyobrief.com\/articles\/ispace-spacex-starship-lunar-cargo-deal\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">according to Tokyo Brief<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-c0372a22-7b0c-11f1-879e-9b0af7e217ac-2\">&#8220;We are very pleased to be able to offer the new Lunar Access Integration service utilizing Starship&#8217;s payload space through our collaboration with <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18853-spacex.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18853-spacex.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18853-spacex.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">SpaceX<\/a>,&#8221; ispace founder and CEO Takeshi Hakamada said in a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ispace-inc.com\/2026\/07\/08\/ispace-accelerates-growth-in-the-lunar-infrastructure-market\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.ispace-inc.com\/2026\/07\/08\/ispace-accelerates-growth-in-the-lunar-infrastructure-market\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">statement today<\/a>. &#8220;High-capacity, relatively low-cost lunar transport, such as that provided by Starship, is essential to realizing the sustainable lunar economy that ispace aims to create.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-c0372cc0-7b0c-11f1-8b39-71edd41f260e\">As that quote suggests, ispace may become a regular Starship customer over the years, using the giant vehicle to carry its new &#8220;Mobile Cargo System&#8221; to the lunar surface. The MCS is a pallet-like flat rover capable of transporting up to 1,100 pounds (500 kg) across the lunar terrain.<\/p>\n<p>The newly announced Mobile Cargo System moon mission aboard Starship will launch no earlier than 2030, according to ispace. The timeline will depend largely on SpaceX&#8217;s ability to progress Starship into an operational vehicle. (Starship has flown <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/spacex-starship-v3-megarocket-first-test-flight\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/spacex-starship-v3-megarocket-first-test-flight\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/spacex-starship-v3-megarocket-first-test-flight\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">12 test flights to date<\/a>, all of them suborbital.)<\/p>\n<p>            You may like<\/p>\n<p>ispace has flown with SpaceX before; <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18962-spacex-falcon-9.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18962-spacex-falcon-9.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18962-spacex-falcon-9.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Falcon 9<\/a> rockets launched the Japanese company&#8217;s robotic HAKUTO-R moon rover in both <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/spacex-launches-japanese-moon-lander-uae-rover\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/spacex-launches-japanese-moon-lander-uae-rover\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/spacex-launches-japanese-moon-lander-uae-rover\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">2022<\/a> and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/spacex-launches-2-private-lunar-landers-to-the-moon-photos\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/spacex-launches-2-private-lunar-landers-to-the-moon-photos\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/spacex-launches-2-private-lunar-landers-to-the-moon-photos\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">2025<\/a>. Both times, HAKUTO-R reached lunar orbit successfully but crashed during its landing attempt.<\/p>\n<p>Starship is SpaceX&#8217;s super-heavy-lift launch vehicle, which is designed for full reusability and capable of launching up to 150 tons (136 metric tons) to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/low-earth-orbit\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/low-earth-orbit\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/low-earth-orbit\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">low Earth orbit<\/a>. The rocket has been in development for a while; SpaceX founder and CEO <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18849-elon-musk.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18849-elon-musk.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18849-elon-musk.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Elon Musk<\/a> first announced the vehicle during the International Astronomical Congress in Mexico <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/34210-elon-musk-unveils-spacex-mars-colony-ship.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/34210-elon-musk-unveils-spacex-mars-colony-ship.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/34210-elon-musk-unveils-spacex-mars-colony-ship.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">in 2016<\/a>. Expectations for its operational readiness have been an ever-moving goal post.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/media\/img\/spc-logo-w.svg\" alt=\"Space\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"w-auto h-7 block w-auto mx-auto mb-4 h-[30px]\" data-component-name=\"Image\"\/><\/p>\n<p>In 2021, for example, SpaceX was targeting sometime <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/elon-musk-spacex-starship-to-moon-sooner-2024\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/elon-musk-spacex-starship-to-moon-sooner-2024\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/elon-musk-spacex-starship-to-moon-sooner-2024\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;before 2024&#8221;<\/a> for the spacecraft&#8217;s first mission to the moon, but development delays have continually pushed that date back. 2024 was also the year NASA originally targeted for the first crewed lunar landing mission of the agency&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-program.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-program.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-program.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Artemis program<\/a>, though that&#8217;s no longer the plan.<\/p>\n<p>NASA contracted Starship as the lunar lander for that touchdown, which is now slated to take place during <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/trump-gifts-artemis-astronauts-a-flag-from-the-us-capitol-to-plant-on-the-moon\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/trump-gifts-artemis-astronauts-a-flag-from-the-us-capitol-to-plant-on-the-moon\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/trump-gifts-artemis-astronauts-a-flag-from-the-us-capitol-to-plant-on-the-moon\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Artemis IV<\/a> in late 2028. Agency officials have cited Starship as part of the reason that Artemis&#8217; schedules have slipped.<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-ebfb9c4c-7b0c-11f1-ada4-f135f8a60533\">NASA and ispace aren&#8217;t the only customers that have signed up for a Starship ride to the moon. For example, Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa announced the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/41857-dearmoon-spacex-epic-lunar-art-project.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/41857-dearmoon-spacex-epic-lunar-art-project.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/41857-dearmoon-spacex-epic-lunar-art-project.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">#dearMoon project<\/a> in 2018, booking Starship to fly himself and a handful of artists on what would have been the spacecraft&#8217;s first crewed mission around the moon. As Starship delays continued to mount, though, Maezawa <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/japanese-billionaire-cancels-spacex-starship-moon-dearmoon-flight?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/japanese-billionaire-cancels-spacex-starship-moon-dearmoon-flight?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/japanese-billionaire-cancels-spacex-starship-moon-dearmoon-flight?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">canceled the flight<\/a> in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>            What to read next<\/p>\n<p>But momentum is building for Starship moon missions. After all, NASA now has two successful Artemis missions in the books \u2014 the uncrewed <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-1-going-back-to-the-moon\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-1-going-back-to-the-moon\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-1-going-back-to-the-moon\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Artemis I<\/a> to lunar orbit in late 2022 and the four-person <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-2-humans-moon-orbit\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-2-humans-moon-orbit\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-2-humans-moon-orbit\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Artemis II<\/a> flight around the moon this past April. The agency is gearing up for <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-3-moon-landing-mission\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-3-moon-landing-mission\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-3-moon-landing-mission\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Artemis III<\/a>, which will test rendezvous and docking operations with NASA&#8217;s Orion capsule and two crewed lunar landers \u2014 Starship and Blue Origin&#8217;s Blue Moon \u2014 in Earth orbit in mid-2027, if all goes to plan.<\/p>\n<p>So ispace is positioning itself to be a key player in a possible lunar goldrush.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The emergence of rockets with the capability of transporting large-scale payloads to the moon is expected to accelerate deployment of lunar infrastructure, including power, communications, construction, data and mobility,&#8221; ispace said in today&#8217;s statement.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The establishment of this core infrastructure on the lunar surface will reduce barriers hindering subsequent infrastructure projects, leading to a rapid expansion in the transport of relatively small lunar payloads for purposes such as technology validation, exploration and business development,&#8221; the company wrote, adding that, as mission demand grows, so too will the payload capacity of its Mobile Cargo System units.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the new Mobile Cargo System design, ispace is also planning three lunar landing missions with its ULTRA Lander vehicle, which are scheduled for 2028, 2029 and 2030.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"ispace is expanding its already extensive moon plans to include SpaceX&#8217;s Starship megarocket.
