Scientists say there&#8217;s no unclassified, peer-reviewed research on the topic either.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Now, a researcher at the <a data-ylk=\"slk:Massachusetts Institute of Technology;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;link&quot;,&quot;yLinkElementType&quot;:&quot;article_link&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/student\/news\/so-why-is-mit-number-one-in-the-world-university-rankings-8806894.html\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Massachusetts Institute of Technology<\/a> has proposed a sensor system that could orbit close to a satellite and detect neutrons generated by high-energy protons colliding with radioactive material, confirming whether it&#8217;s carrying nukes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The sensor system, about the size of a large encyclopaedia, can detect a <a data-ylk=\"slk:nuclear weapon;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;link&quot;,&quot;yLinkElementType&quot;:&quot;article_link&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/asia\/north-korea-claims-to-have-built-miniature-nuclear-warheads-that-fit-on-ballistic-missiles-a6920556.html\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">nuclear weapon<\/a> with 99 per cent accuracy if it orbits within 4,000m of the suspect satellite for about a week, says the researcher Areg Danagoulian.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Taking the <a data-ylk=\"slk:sensor system;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;link&quot;,&quot;yLinkElementType&quot;:&quot;article_link&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/europe-greek-athens-mediterranean-european-union-b3003424.html\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">sensor system <\/a>to within 1,000m of the suspect satellite or using multiple small sensors can reduce the detection time to a few hours, he claims.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"Satellites such as Sentinel-1 and ALOS-2 carry advanced synthetic aperture radars (ESA)\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"960\" height=\"538\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"rounded-lg\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/https:\/\/media.zenfs.com\/en\/the_independent_635\/5644f31ff66efe121901a4b3681c57b1.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Satellites such as Sentinel-1 and ALOS-2 carry advanced synthetic aperture radars (ESA)<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The sensor works on the basis that when an energetic proton slams into elements with high atomic numbers, like uranium and plutonium, it knocks out <a data-ylk=\"slk:scores of neutrons;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;link&quot;,&quot;yLinkElementType&quot;:&quot;article_link&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/space\/nuclear-fission-stars-element-formation-b2464548.html\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">scores of neutrons<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;That is a ridiculously large number. We are talking about millions of protons per second per square centimetre, with many of them generating 40 neutrons,&#8221; Dr Danagoulian says in a study published in Nature. &#8220;The question is, can you detect some of those neutrons?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">He envisions using a pair of panels made up of pixels of neutron sensors, known as <a data-ylk=\"slk:scintillators;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;link&quot;,&quot;yLinkElementType&quot;:&quot;article_link&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/home-news\/china-ghost-particle-machine-subatomic-science-b2828135.html\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">scintillators<\/a>, that interact with radiation and emit light.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">These panels are sandwiched between diamond detectors that allow the sensor to distinguish between neutrons coming from radioactive materials and natural protons and electrons.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;I very much hope this will turn into a real system, or proof-of-concept system, but the goal right now is to get national labs to use this work for their own research and to get policymakers to seriously consider this technology as a potential part of national technical means,&#8221; Dr Danagoulian noted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The problem of nuclear explosions in space is not new to humankind.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">In 1962, the US detonated a 1.4-megaton thermonuclear warhead in space, destroying many of the early <a data-ylk=\"slk:satellites;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;link&quot;,&quot;yLinkElementType&quot;:&quot;article_link&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/satellites\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">satellites<\/a> of the era.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;When you&#8217;ve a nuclear detonation in outer space, basically the whole body of the bomb becomes ionised, and nearly every single electron in the <a data-ylk=\"slk:weapon;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;link&quot;,&quot;yLinkElementType&quot;:&quot;article_link&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/weapon\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">weapon<\/a>&#8216;s mass becomes free,&#8221; Dr Danagoulian said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;It gets injected into what&#8217;s called the inner Van Allen radiation belt. Once there, the electrons start hitting everything flying through those belts, causing ionisation, radiation damage, and more.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"Artist's impression of a cubesat (UNSW)\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"960\" height=\"576\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"rounded-lg\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/https:\/\/media.zenfs.com\/en\/the_independent_635\/d4499424746b582283b7559399d11596.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Artist&#8217;s impression of a cubesat (UNSW)<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The Outer Space Treaty, ratified by 118 countries, including the US, China, and Russia, declares space the &#8220;province of all mankind&#8221; and bans nuclear weapons in it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">But monitoring compliance with the treaty took on increased urgency after Russia&#8217;s 2022 launch of a suspicious satellite, Cosmos2553, which the US suspected could be carrying components of a nuclear device undergoing testing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Some American officials suspected the Russian satellite was launched with the possible goal of fielding an actual anti-satellite nuclear <a data-ylk=\"slk:weapon in the;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;link&quot;,&quot;yLinkElementType&quot;:&quot;article_link&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/weapon\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">weapon in the <\/a>future.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;If we eventually have some verification mechanisms for the Outer Space Treaty, that will put pressure on countries to respect the treaty or disclose what they are doing,&#8221; Dr Danagoulian said, &#8220;because they know if they try to violate it, we will find out.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;The Russians launched this satellite in a very strange and unusual orbit because it goes through the most hostile environment possible around the planet. No one puts <a data-ylk=\"slk:satellites;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;link&quot;,&quot;yLinkElementType&quot;:&quot;article_link&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/satellites\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">satellites<\/a> there because it&#8217;s highly radioactive. Why would you put a satellite in that orbit? Well, that location is likely the best point for trapping electrons if you were to detonate a thermonuclear <a data-ylk=\"slk:weapon;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;link&quot;,&quot;yLinkElementType&quot;:&quot;article_link&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/weapon\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">weapon<\/a>,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The scientist cautioned that his latest study didn&#8217;t provide a &#8220;completely proven system&#8221;.
