\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\nCanada\u2019s largest airport is warning passengers\u00a0to be careful about what they click on. Officials at Toronto Pearson Airport say artificial-intelligence (A.I.) generated articles are giving false and misleading information about flight operations.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn the last few months, we\u2019ve seen this really ramp up,\u201d said Sean Davidson, Pearson Airport spokesperson.\u00a0<\/p>\n
On first glance, the headlines from multiple travel-centric websites appear legitimate. But take a closer look and you\u2019ll find fake headlines like this one posted just last week:\u00a0\u201cI.T. Outage Triggers Major Flight Chaos Across Canada.\u201d<\/p>\n
It\u2019s a growing problem for Pearson.<\/p>\n
\u201cSome \u2018authors\u2019 on these websites (are) writing up to 100 articles a day so it\u2019s clearly done by A.I.,\u201d Davidson adds. \u201cAnd we\u2019re concerned about it because we don\u2019t want passengers to either have to show up when it\u2019s not necessary or maybe they\u2019re cancelling or rebooking a flight because they\u2019re concerned about what\u2019s going on at the airport.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
Davidson says the airport has\u00a0attempted to contact these websites multiple times to take down the inaccurate information, but to no avail.<\/p>\n
He says it\u2019s an issue impacting airports across North America.<\/p>\n
Cybersecurity expert, Ritesh Kotak, says the bogus content can generate very real profits for the people behind them.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe way these\u00a0websites make money is if they\u2019re able to generate traffic, if they\u2019re able to get people to click\u00a0on things, then guess what? They can sell advertising space on it. And by selling that advertising\u00a0space, they\u2019re able to generate revenue. And the more people that go to it, the more clicks they\u00a0get, the more money that puts into their bank accounts.\u201d<\/p>\n
Another cybersecurity expert CityNews spoke with says the sites also engage in data collection and can pose serious security risks.<\/p>\n
\u201cThese sites collect information from us, data, and\u00a0that information can be used in all sorts of ways against us as well,\u201d warned Carmi Levy. \u201cSites like this have also\u00a0been associated with ransomware, malware attacks.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThere are many ways this can go, none of them are in consumers\u2019 best interest.\u201d<\/p>\n
CityNews reached out to the websites for comment, but did not immediately receive a response.<\/p>\n
Experts say online users need to be more vigilant in the age of A.I. and take every step to ensure what they\u2019re reading is legitimate.<\/p>\n
In this case that means go straight to the source \u2014 either your airline\u2019s official webpage or social media channel, or Pearson\u2019s.\u00a0<\/p>\n
