There is no CFL video game in 2026. The Canadian Football League has no licensed video game on any platform. The last official CFL video game was CFL Football ’99, released in 1999. No game has held a CFL license since then.

Fans still search for a “CFL video game” every year. This guide covers the current options, the history, and why no licensed game exists today.

The current option: Maximum Football (2025)

The closest game on the market is Maximum Football. Invictus Games developed it. Maximum Entertainment published it. The game launched on June 17, 2025, after an early access period that started on November 7, 2024.

Maximum Football is free to play. It runs on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Steam, Windows, and macOS.

The game covers American football. It includes a college dynasty mode and a pro season mode with 32 teams. It uses generic teams and rosters. It does not have an NFL license, and it does not have a CFL license. The game has no CFL teams and no CFL branding.

Maximum Football is the successor to Doug Flutie’s Maximum Football 2020. That earlier game used Canadian three-down rules. The 2025 version focuses on American football.

The last licensed CFL game: CFL Football ’99

CFL Football ’99 was the last game to carry an official CFL license. It came out in 1999. More than 25 years have passed without a new licensed title.

The Canuck Play games

One studio built Canadian football games without a CFL license. David Winter founded Canuck Play in Peterborough, Ontario. The studio released three titles that used Canadian rules.

Canadian Football 2017 launched on July 26, 2017, for Windows and Xbox One. It featured 12 players per side, three downs, a 20-second play clock, and no fair catch. These are core Canadian football rules.

The studio then released Maximum Football and Doug Flutie’s Maximum Football 2020. None of the three games held a CFL license. Winter sought CFL rights but could not secure the funding.

Canuck Play ceased operations in April 2021. Winter explained the reasons in a statement: “The ability for a small team to keep up development of such a large and complex title, combined with the never-ending changes in technology in the game industry, just make continuing untenable.” He also cited a month-long hospitalization from overwork and Ontario lockdowns.

Why there is no licensed CFL video game

Three factors keep a licensed CFL game off the market.

Cost is the first factor. A CFL license and a players’ association deal require money. Small studios cannot fund the rights. Winter could not raise the venture capital for CFL 2017.

Market size is the second factor. The CFL is smaller than the NFL. Publishers see a smaller sales base, so the return does not match the cost of a full game.

Development complexity is the third factor. Canadian football uses a wider field, three downs, 12 players, and a 20-second play clock. A developer cannot reskin an NFL game. The rules and field need separate work.
