{"id":792282,"date":"2026-07-10T07:03:10","date_gmt":"2026-07-10T07:03:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/792282\/"},"modified":"2026-07-10T07:03:10","modified_gmt":"2026-07-10T07:03:10","slug":"ancient-fossil-may-hold-clues-to-right-handedness","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/792282\/","title":{"rendered":"Ancient fossil may hold clues to right-handedness"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Fossils reveal the earliest animal with a head was also the oldest known \u2018righty\u2019<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/author_avatar.png\" width=\"48\" height=\"48\" alt=\"Default author avatar\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p data-node-id=\"0\">If you happen to be right-handed, you may be able to trace the origins of that trait to a wormlike animal that lived about 550 million years ago and had a tendency to bend to the right.<\/p>\n<p data-node-id=\"1\">Spriggina floundersi appeared in oceans during the <a href=\"https:\/\/ucmp.berkeley.edu\/vendian\/ediacaran.php\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ediacaran Period<\/a> (635 million to 542 million years ago) at the dawn of the first forms of animal life.<\/p>\n<p data-node-id=\"2\">The small creature\u2019s flat, segmented body, known only from fossils found in what\u2019s now South Australia, was a stretched-out oval. It tapered to a tip at one end and had a large, curved structure at the other, making it the earliest known animal with a head.<\/p>\n<p data-node-id=\"3\">Paleontologists described the first Spriggina fossils in 1958. Since then, scientists have debated whether the animal could move on its own. To answer that question, researchers recently examined more than 100 fossils in the most comprehensive analysis of Spriggina since its discovery.<\/p>\n<p data-node-id=\"5\">The scientists concluded that not only did Spriggina wriggle across the seafloor, but the abundance of fossil specimens curving left meant that these early animals favored their right sides, a behavioral preference seen in modern animals that are right-handed.<\/p>\n<p data-node-id=\"6\">No animal quite like Spriggina exists today, but it set the evolutionary stage for directional preference, a trait possessed not only by most <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosbiology\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pbio.3003771\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">humans<\/a> but also by other <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC3068228\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">primates<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/1881972\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">mice<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfu.ca\/biology\/faculty\/dill\/publications\/frog.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">frogs<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/qbi.uq.edu.au\/article\/2017\/11\/bees-prefer-left-or-right\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">insects<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-node-id=\"7\">\u201cFossils of early animals, to most people \u2014 even to me \u2014 they look weird,\u201d said Scott Evans, lead author of the study detailing the findings that published Thursday in the journal <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/s41598-026-53857-x\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Scientific Reports<\/a>. But if you push past that weirdness, \u201cwhat we see is that a lot of the fundamental characters that we associate with animals today, things like the ability to move and even having this behavioral handedness, are present in these earliest animal communities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A \u2018really surprising\u2019 discovery<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text\" data-node-id=\"9\">In some of the fossils, the bodies were straight, while others were curved. The fossils were mirrored imprints of the animals\u2019 soft bodies. Most bent left in the rock, indicating that their bodies curved right in life.<\/p>\n<p data-node-id=\"10\">Researchers examined body curves and compared them across fossils. S. floundersi measured no more than 4 inches long, though most were just 0.8 to 1.2 inches in length.<\/p>\n<p data-node-id=\"11\">The team studied the rocks around the fossils for telltale signs of currents and storms to learn whether the curved bodies meant that the animals were pushed by moving water or could move on their own.<\/p>\n<p data-node-id=\"12\">\u201cThe really surprising thing was that they had this \u2018handedness,\u2019\u201d said Evans, an assistant curator of invertebrate paleontology at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City and an assistant professor at the museum\u2019s Richard Gilder Graduate School.<\/p>\n<p data-node-id=\"13\">\u201cAbout twice as many of these things are bent to the left as are bent to the right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-node-id=\"15\">He thought that the abundance of left-bending fossils was odd but was unsure what it meant.<\/p>\n<p data-node-id=\"16\">\u201cThen I looked into how researchers identify handedness\u201d in animals alive today, he explained. Evans found the same 2-1 ratio of individuals favoring their right sides.<\/p>\n<p data-node-id=\"17\">\u201cThat suggests that this is a significant behavioral preference in Spriggina,\u201d he said. \u201cI never thought that for an impression of a half- billion-year-old organism, we\u2019d be able to say it preferred to turn one way versus the other.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-node-id=\"18\">Identifying right-handedness in this way is statistically significant and suggests that Spriggina already had a nervous system connected to muscles, allowing it to curve in a preferential direction, said Diego Garc\u00eda-Bellido, a senior paleontology researcher at the South Australian Museum and an associate professor of paleontology at Adelaide University. He was not involved in the new research.<\/p>\n<p data-node-id=\"19\">\u201cI am very cautious when interpreting the fossil record, and I believe Evans and coauthors have been as well,\u201d said Garc\u00eda-Bellido, a specialist in animals from the Ediacaran and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/science\/Cambrian-Period\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cambrian<\/a> periods, in an email. \u201cThey have clearly considered and stated all alternative hypotheses and they offer clear, valid arguments for their interpretations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Behind the bend<\/p>\n<p data-node-id=\"22\">Some extinct animals leave fossilized trails behind them, proving that they could creep, slither or crawl. Spriggina was not so obliging, so scientists had to dig deeper for their proof.<\/p>\n<p data-node-id=\"23\">First, the research team examined Spriggina anatomy to check its range of motion. Curves in various fossils showed that Spriggina could bend in both directions, and deeply enough to form a U shape.<\/p>\n<p data-node-id=\"24\">Evans\u2019 next question was: \u201cIs that bending because of something in the environment \u2014 a wave or a storm that bent the specimen \u2014 or is that because the specimen can, in fact, bend its body?\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-node-id=\"25\">The researchers excavated layers of rock covering tens of square meters and containing hundreds of different fossil specimens. If the Spriggina specimens were all facing in the same direction or all bent in the same way, the researchers reasoned, that could suggest an external force was acting on all the animals equally.<\/p>\n<p data-node-id=\"26\">Instead, the team found specimens oriented in different directions with different magnitudes of body bending, a sight that told them \u201cthis is a thing that could move around in any way it wants, and we capture it at various stages of that movement,\u201d Evans said.<\/p>\n<p data-node-id=\"27\">\u201cWe even have Spriggina that are found on some of those beds where other fossils show impact from currents,\u201d he added, \u201cand they too are not bent in ways consistent with that current or consistent with each other.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-node-id=\"28\">Another possibility was that after the animals died and dried out, their bodies curved.
