A Brampton truck driver has allegedly cut off his ankle monitor and fled ahead of a sentencing for drug smuggling charges.<\/p>\n
Charanpreet Singh, 29, was found guilty of smuggling cocaine (55 kilograms) and heroin (five kilograms) into Canada over the Blue Water Bridge, near Sarnia on April 8, 2022,\u00a0 court records show.<\/p>\n
On Feb. 3 this year, Singh was released on bail with an ankle monitor and was supposed to stay at his sister\u2019s home in Brampton.<\/p>\n
But he did not show up for sentencing scheduled at a Sarnia courthouse on June 24.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe removed his ankle monitor and did not show up for his court date,\u201d a Peel Regional Police spokesperson told INsauga.com.<\/p>\n
As of Friday morning, there is an active warrant out for Charanpreet Singh, and he is still at large, the spokesperson said.<\/p>\n
It is unclear where he is now.<\/p>\n
The sentencing hearing went ahead in Singh\u2019s absence, with the court imposing a 15-year sentence, according to<\/a> the Sarnia Observer.<\/p>\n On Feb. 3, the court declined a request to revoke bail<\/a>. The judge argued that there \u201cis no evidence to suggest that Mr. Singh is a flight risk. In particular, I note that his wife and child are Canadian citizens. The Crown does not suggest he is a flight risk.\u201d<\/p>\n Singh is a citizen of India and was in Canada as a permanent resident, the court document states. He is married with one child.
