{"id":79383,"date":"2025-08-18T19:06:16","date_gmt":"2025-08-18T19:06:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/79383\/"},"modified":"2025-08-18T19:06:16","modified_gmt":"2025-08-18T19:06:16","slug":"nia-dacosta-had-one-note-for-28-years-later-the-bone-temple-script","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/79383\/","title":{"rendered":"Nia DaCosta Had One Note for &#8217;28 Years Later: The Bone Temple&#8217; Script"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/nia-dacosta\/\" id=\"auto-tag_nia-dacosta_1\" data-tag=\"nia-dacosta\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nia DaCosta<\/a> has teased what to expect from her instalment of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/danny-boyle\/\" id=\"auto-tag_danny-boyle_1\" data-tag=\"danny-boyle\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Danny Boyle<\/a>\u2018s 28 Days Later sequel, 28 Years Later.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tDaCosta took on directing duties for The Bone Temple, filmed back to back with Boyle\u2019s movie released earlier this year that featured Alfie Williams, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer and Ralph Fiennes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAt an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/edinburgh-international-film-festival\/\" id=\"auto-tag_edinburgh-international-film-festival_1\" data-tag=\"edinburgh-international-film-festival\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Edinburgh International Film Festival<\/a> event on Monday, DaCosta said fans of the zombie apocalypse franchise will be seeing more of Spike\u2019s story and Jack O\u2019Connell\u2019s character in her movie, set for a January 2026 release.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cMaking the 28 Years Later sequel was one of the best filmmaking experiences I\u2019ve had,\u201d DaCosta, director of The Marvels (2023) and Candyman (2021), said. \u201cOne of the issues I had with Candyman and Marvels was the lack of a really solid script, which is always gonna just wreak havoc on the whole process. But Alex Garland hands you a script, and you\u2019re like, \u2018This is amazing.\u2019 You don\u2019t really have to change it, although I did, I basically asked for more infected. [Laughs.] That was, like, my big contribution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cI inherited an amazing cast, then I was given the leeway to cast the rest of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/film\/\" id=\"auto-tag_film_1\" data-tag=\"film\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">film<\/a>,\u201d she continued. \u201cThere were a couple of locations I inherited. I was given the leeway to develop all the other locations. Some of it overlapped, like the character Samson \u2014\u00a0Danny and I would collaborate a bit on the look, but at the end of the day, Danny shoots so different from the way I shoot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe filmmaker \u2014 whose MCU instalment is the highest-grossing film of all-time directed by a Black woman \u2014 was in Edinburgh to discuss her varied career from Top Boy to the upcoming Tessa Thompson-starring Hedda, which is world premiering at the Toronto Film Fest next month. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tShe also went into a little detail about landing the job on one of cinema\u2019s biggest horror franchises. \u201c28 Days Later was one of my seminal films growing up\u2026 I had the DVD in my house. I watched it all the time. Obviously, fell in love with Cillian Murphy. And Danny Boyle is a bonkers fucking filmmaker. No one else can make a Danny Boyle film, and that was actually the biggest part of my pitch for the movie. I was like, \u2018No one else can do that and I don\u2019t have any intention of doing that. Here\u2019s how I see the film, what do you think?&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIt turns out it was none other than The Zone of Interest helmer Jonathan Glazer who convinced her to take on The Bone Temple. \u201cThe time was so terrible because I was finishing Hedda and it overlapped slightly, and I was like, \u2018I can\u2019t do it.\u2019 I was at a dinner with Jonathan Glazer and I was like, \u2018He\u2019ll tell me not do it.\u2019 I was like, \u2018Jonathan, this script\u2019s come around and I don\u2019t know, do you think I should do it?&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s 28 Years Later and I [thought], the man who made Birth and all his unique, personal films is not going to tell me to do a franchise film. He goes, \u2018Do you like the script?\u2019 [I said], \u2018Damn it, I love it.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe New York-born creative spoke candidly while reflecting on her colorful career so far, from studying at Tisch School of the Arts in New York to her breakout movie Little Woods (2018).
