Randolph Mantooth<\/a>, best known for his iconic portrayal of paramedic John Gage on Emergency!<\/a>, died on July 9 of complications from cancer. He was 80.<\/p>\n

Born on September 19, 1945, in Sacramento, California, Mantooth was the oldest of four children. His father was Cherokee and Seminole, while his mother was of German and English descent. The family moved frequently because of his father\u2019s construction engineering work. He discovered his passion for acting through student productions while attending San Marcos High School. After studying at Santa Barbara City College, he earned a scholarship to the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was always interested in acting on a dogmatic level because I was always acting anyway,\u201d Mantooth noted during a 2013 interview with TelevisionAcademy.com. \u201cI hated being the new kid in town \u2026 so I would always act like I\u2019d been there for a long time.\u201d<\/p>\n

While starring in a production of Philadelphia, Here I Come!, Mantooth was discovered by a Universal Studios talent agent and signed to a contract. After returning to Los Angeles, he built his r\u00e9sum\u00e9 with guest roles on Ironside, The Virginian, Marcus Welby, M.D.<\/a>, and The Bold Ones before landing his career-defining role in 1972 as paramedic John Gage on Emergency!<\/p>\n

\u201cFirst thing I said was, \u2018What the hell\u2019s a paramedic?\u2019\u201d he said in the same TelevisionAcademy.com interview. \u201cBecause at that time, there weren\u2019t paramedics. There were only 13 in all of California at that time, and nobody had ever heard of them before.\u201d<\/p>\n

The groundbreaking series became a ratings success, ran for six seasons, and made Mantooth a television star. During its run, Mantooth directed two episodes as well as the television movie The Greatest Rescues of Emergency!. Alongside co-star Kevin Tighe<\/a>, who played Roy DeSoto, Mantooth performed most of his stunts. He also reprised John Gage on other shows, including Adam-12<\/a>, voiced the animated version of the character in the Saturday morning cartoon Emergency+4, and was featured in comic books and promotional merchandise based on the hit series.<\/p>\n

In 2012, Mantooth and Tighe were honored by the Los Angeles Fire Department, which presented them with traditional white leather Cairns chiefs\u2019 helmets and named them Honorary Fire Chiefs in recognition of their contributions to public awareness of emergency medicine and fire services. Mantooth remained a lifelong advocate for firefighters, paramedics and EMTs, making appearances across the country in support of first responders.<\/p>\n

Following Emergency!, Mantooth remained a television mainstay, with roles on series including Operation Petticoat<\/a>, Dallas, Charlie\u2019s Angels, The Love Boat<\/a>, L.A. Law<\/a>, Fantasy Island and Battlestar Galactica.<\/p>\n

In 1987, he transitioned to daytime television when he joined the cast of Loving<\/a> as Clay Alden. His performance earned him four Soap Opera Digest nominations. He left the series in 1990 to spend two years on General Hospital<\/a> as Richard Halifax, a role he played for two years (\u201cI hated that show,\u201d he revealed in the TelevisionAcademy.com interview) before returning to Loving in 1993 for the soap\u2019s final two years.<\/p>\n

\u201cTurned out, I worked off and on for almost nine years on that show. I\u2019ve never had more fun in my life,\u201d Mantooth added. \u201cI would swing my feet out of bed in the morning, and I\u2019d go, \u2018Oh, my God, and they\u2019re paying me.\u2019 I had a blast\u2026. They let me ad-lib. I\u2019ve never had more fun going to a set. Emergency! was great but it was work.\u201d<\/p>\n

In 1995, Mantooth joined the Loving spin-off, The City, as Alex Masters, where he remained until the series ended in 1997. \u201cI was playing a villain with a heart, and they said, \u2018Now, we like you as a hero with an edge,\u2019\u201d he explained of the character shift. \u201cI loved the people I was working with. At that time, I was divorced so I\u2019m single, I\u2019m around all these beautiful women, I\u2019m getting paid, and I\u2019m in New York, and I can do theater. It was a dream.\u201d<\/p>\n

He returned to daytime television in 2004, taking over the recurring role of Hal Munson on As the World Turns<\/a>, replacing Benjamin Hendrickson. In 2007, he briefly joined One Life to Live<\/a> as Kirk Harmon, the father of baseball star Tate Harmon (Chris Beetem).<\/p>\n

After his soap run ended, Mantooth continued working steadily in primetime television, guest-starring on series including Criminal Minds<\/a>, Ghost Whisperer<\/a> and Sons of Anarchy<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In 2015, Mantooth revealed in a Facebook post that he had been diagnosed with cancer. After completing treatment, he shared an encouraging update with fans, writing, \u201cIt pleases me to say that I have successfully completed treatment and have begun the long recovery process. I am feeling stronger every day.\u201d<\/p>\n

Although his career spanned more than five decades across television, film and theater, Mantooth remained best known for Emergency! and the role of John Gage, a character who inspired generations of firefighters, paramedics and EMTs. Long after the series ended, he remained one of the profession\u2019s most dedicated ambassadors while also supporting Native American organizations and participating in community events.<\/p>\n
