If you’re a proud owner of your own homemade compost heap<\/a>, you’ll be more than aware of how clumpy it can get. And if you’re using it to plant up patio container plants<\/a>, these lumps need to go for the best results.<\/p>\n

“When you make homemade compost, it is often very lumpy. This is fine if you just need bulky material for mulching or filling raised beds in the garden,” starts Simon.<\/p>\n

“But ideally, you want a nice, fine compost for seed sowing and potting on plants. For this reason, I sieve my garden compost. You can use a specific garden composting sieve (a riddle). But an old tennis racquet works just as well!” he continues.<\/p>\n

“Instead of buying a compost sieve for removing the lumps in your homemade compost, repurpose your old tennis racquet instead. Your old racquet has a perfectly weighted handle, and the racquet holes are the perfect size for removing lumps,” Simon points out.<\/p>\n

“Gardeners call the process of sieving compost \u2018riddling\u2019, and a compost sieve is known as a riddle,” Simon explains.<\/p>\n
